Could it be the same problem which ended the Chicago to Honolulu flight? The pilots' union. I believe it has something to do with the pilot demand for relief pilots on two person cockpit flights longer than X hours. Maybe the flights to Hawaii don't earn enough revenue to justify the labor cost of a relief crew. So now all United flights depart from the West Coast. I don't have the details, but given the self appointed experts on this forum, someone will fill in the details.
