Orders Never Delivered

Sat Mar 10, 2001 11:52 am

Can anyone tell me what airlines had firm orders for a particular type of a/c not already in the fleet, but never ended up operating that type, either through cancellation of the order and/or the airline ceasing to exist?

Here's what I was able to find.

Alaska: MD-90
Valujet: 717
America West: A300-600, 767-200
British Caledonian: MD-11
TWA: A330
Northwest: A330
Continental: A340
SkyWest: SAAB 2000
Southern: MD-80
Western: 767-200

Quite a few airlines ordered the concorde, but then dropped them when the fuel prices rocketed.

Dragonair ordered the MD11 back when they were still competing with Cathay. They ordered (from memory) 3 MD11s mainly to fly to London. That's when Cathay said "we can't have you doing that!" and bought Dragonair and made them it's smaller regional airline. Obviously, the MD11s were cancelled.

Actually, Dragonair was very very interested in the 757 as well, but I am not sure if they ever ordered any.

ValuJet did get the 717, They changed there name to AirTran and have ordered 50 and are looking the buy TWA's orders.

I don't know who it was but someone cancled an order for 20 757, I saw that on the boeing site.

And NW just ordered "22" A-330-200s ....not sure on the number.

For Northwest, you mean the A340, not the A330. Back in 1992 I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), NWA cancelled their orders for the type that it held. The A330's were deferred until recently when they were brought back to firm. Also,

When did AmWest order the 767 and A300? I remember though about BCAL and their order for the MD11, as they were originally slated to be the launch customer of the aircraft.

America West

Sat Mar 10, 2001 1:40 pm

If you can find it, please check out the 1987 book, "Modern Commercial Aircraft", and see the airline index in the back.
America West was listed as having both the 762 and the AB3-6 on order as of First Quarter 1987.

It is possible that it was a misprint, but I cross checked numerous other fleets and orders listed, and to this day never found any discrepancies.

Sorry man.... NWA order a pile of A330-300's, 757-300's, and A320's. keep in mind that is 330's, not 340's. NWA has no plans of getting 340's in the near future.

The 20 B757-200s cancelled were from NWA. NWA actually changed them to the 18 (+2reconfirmable) B757-300s.
It is stipulated in the contract that NWA may reconvert any amount back to the B757-200.

The early VS '340's were the NW A340's.

Concordes were only ordered by BA & AF, the other airlines only placed options

Libyan Arab ordered two or three B747-200, but after the aircraft were built and even painted they didn´t/couldn´t take them because of the "war" with the US in 1980. The aircraft were then repainted in Air Algerie´s red and green livery. But also this deal didn´t come through, so in the end they were taken by Varig one year later. They are now flying for Air Hongkong, converted to freighters.

Western and Bonanza is listed as having cancelled BAC-111 orders.

TWA SE-210 Caravelles are listed as not taken up. (A/C del. to Indian airlines, Alitalia, JAT, Austrian and LAN Chile.)

I'm not sure about which airlines had Concorde on order......

Wardair: Fokker 100, MD80, Airbus A310 (well, they had some Airbuses before they were taken over, but most were never received)

Can anyone confirm this? I'm not 100% sure about the Fokkers and MD80s, were they already ordered or just negotiating?

VIASA ordered the MD11 (2 of them), but when Iberia bought the airline, the order was cancelled.

... I remember that LACSA & TransBrasil were in the launch list orders for the B757, they never took over those planes.

TWA had orders for the A330... .

I think China Airlines placed an order for DC-10s in 1973 or 74 but could not complete the transaction because of financing issues. The reason that I think there was an actual order is that they advertised the coming DC-10 in television commercials in Taiwan. The deal apparently fell through a few months later, when they pulled the adverts. They ended up with a couple of ex-Delta 747s I believe.(In 1975)

America West:

2 B747-4G7 on order, not taken up

14 B737-4G7 on order, not taken up

They were going to lease an L-1011 from ATA in 1992, but it was NTU.

I've read that book that mentions the 767s and A300s, but haven't hear that from any other sources.

We have yet to see if they will take the A318s.

Ansett had orders for the A321 & Australian Airlines (QANTAS) had orders for the A320.

These aircraft types were not delivered

QANTAS used it's deposit for the A320 to service & maintain the A300 aircraft they inherited from Australian Airlines (TN). Subsequently, the A300s were sold off a few months or years later

America West A300 & 767-200

Sun Mar 11, 2001 4:13 pm

I am a proud owner of the 1987 book "Modern Commericial Aircraft" and I noticed the misprint many times about America West ordering Airbus A300s and Boeing 767-200s. Those aircraft were actually orders placed by "American" Airlines. Keep in mind that was the time that AA first ordered their A300s and they went into service in 1988. It is true what 24291 mentioned, that America West did order 4 747-400s, but cancelled those orders in 1991 because of Chapter 11 Bankrupty. I hope that sheds a little light on the confusion. BTW, I did read that Western Airlines had orders for the 767-200 back about 1982 but never took delivery and was eventually swallowed up by Delta.
