Will SIA Purchase The B 747-400LR? Or More B 744s?

Sun Mar 11, 2001 5:44 pm

As you may know, a number of Singapore Airlines's B 747-400s are quite old. The first ones were delivered in 1989.

Will they be replacing their oldest B 747-400s? If yes, what will they be replaced by?

I do believe that the A 380s are NOT for the replacement of the B 747-400s but for those ultra busy routes.

If they are to replace their oldest B 747-400s, what will they be buying? The B 747-400LR is an ideal replacement for these planes. Longer range, high capacity.........

Will they be buying it? Or will they purchase more B 747-400s?

All idea are welcome!  Smile

A380 'll be to top in capacity in SIA fleet for high routes.

old 747 'll be remplaced by maybe the 777-300,same capacity, same range.

another solution is the A 340-600 but that seem not logic A 340-300 will leave the fleet but A340-500 will arrive.

then next fleet of SIA:

A380
777-300 and 777-200
A340-500

or

A380
777-300 and 777-200 but in minus number for the -300
A340-600 and -500

747 will then leave the fleet in maybe 10 years for the newest .

12 years old in modern day aviation is not that old although I know SQ like to keep there fleet young
currently an average age of about 5.5 years. They wouldn't be looking at a replacement just yet perhaps in another 2 years. The oldest 744's I think will begin to leave when the A380's begin to arrive in 2006 although I understand the A380's in not replace the 744's.
SQ is certainly looking to expand and I wouldn't be surprized to see them do what US carriers do on some busy routes operating more flights with smaller aircraft.
I think they will turn the current order for 772's on option into firm orders + the 10 on firm order so there's 20 772's.
I would say they will get some 744LR or perhaps A345 as an actual 744 replacement though. Personally I think 744LR.

They are going to purchase 747-400LR, 747-400, A340-500, A340-600, B717, B707, B727, B737 and TU-134.

I know you are fairly new to this forum Robert Milton but this is a serious topic.
I delt they will get anymore 744's once they get the ones currently on firm order, but they do have some on option so they might get convert some of them to firm orders but I don't think they will get anymore 744's after 2003. Maybe 744LR though.

The 747LR would do them a lot of good. Routes such as SIN-SFO, SIN-ORD and so on, would open up with out problem. Although, they are committed to the A380, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Also, United Airline,

Airplanes delvered in 1989 are not old! United is operating some of the oldest 767s from 1982, those are still young by avaition standards. Just wanted to point that out.

SIA seems to be slacking off with their continuous replacing of older aircraft as the A310s and the 744s are still in service. Most of their 744's were delivered before 1994 so are getting old, and this applies to nearly all airlines operating them but with excellent maintenence there is no reason why they will not be flying 20 odd years like some of the 742s which are still going strong across the world.

Two of SIA's oldest 744s, 9V-SMC & SME, are if my memory is correct, serving with Ansett Australia on lease. It has been reported that up to 6 more of SIA's 744s will be sent for the expansion of Ansett's international services but there is rumour travelling that Ansett will in fact receive some of SIA's A340s.

Robert Milton,

Are you in a sound state of mind? Grow Up and be serious. This is not a forum where you can joke about.

As for the topic, I have enquired this to SIA and I expect to get reply in a day or 2. I'll post it here later.

No way! No Airbus A340 to replace 744s please! not at all.

Sorry but no, I just don't want that to happen.

Yeah! This is a serious topic.

I do see SIA going for more B 747-400s. And I do see them buying the B 747-400LR.  Smile

Because there are two topics with the same question currently on this forum I repeat my answer, my opinion here:

There are still half a dozen SIA-orders for 744s to be delivered. Thats first.
A few more of the early 744s may go to Ansett and will be replaced by the still-to-be-delivered-ones. I guess that when a substantial number of 744s needs replacing late in this decade SIA will order a mix of 747X non-stretch for the bulk and a few 777-300LR/A340-500 for less important routes.
Keep in mind that when SIA replaces there 744s (none of them has reached 50% of their service life so far) the first 10 772s will follow immidiately because they are also "getting old" if you compare it to the 744s, so this question in general is rather premature to me.

I agree with Singapore_Air that SIA should purchase the 747X and 747LR.

Qantas3xx:

Why would Airbus 340 to replace the 744s..?
Singapore already flying a few Airbus 330s / Airbus 340s right now, they have plenty to use. We Talking about replacing Boeing 744 delivered in 1989, and if they will buy new ones like today..... Hopefully the Boeing 747X.

Robert Milton:

I wants you to start reading the forum carefully, I think AVIATION is much hard & serious to think and to talk about. Singapore will not go back to old aged aircrafts already out of production. We are talking as of RIGHT NOW Year 2001.

Anything before 1990, NOTHING !!!!!!!

I think SIA will go for more 744s or buying 744LRs. It will be hard for me to imagine A345/346 replacing 744s. I heard that SIA's new A345 will only have 183 seats, instead of the original version of 313 seats. If they did replace 744 by 345/346. They'll lose tons of passengers.

The B 777-200ER is replacing the A 340-300s. So I don't see why SIA will replace its B 747-400s with A 340-600s.

Why did SIA order A340-500's when they are ordering 777-200ER's to replace the 343's?

I see SIA ordering the 747X (non-stretch). With a range of 8900nm and the capacity of a 744, it will be perfect for flights such as SIN-JFK and SIN-ORD. The 345 should be able to make both flights, but probably not with a full load of pax and cargo.

You are right. The A 340 has less range than a B 747 when it is fully loaded.

SIA are actually ordering Boeing 777-200 (normal) to replace all but 6 of their Airbus A340-300E Celestars.

In fact, the B 747X is only a bit bigger than the B 747-400. So I don't see why they have to order them, provided that they already ordered the A 380.

Maybe they will go for some B 747-400LRs. Or more B 747-400s.

Just my 2 cents.

SIA will probably get the 747X along with the A380. The 747X's range of 8900nm will allow it to fly routes such as JFK-SIN at full capacity, which the A345 cannot do.

United Airline,
How old is new to you? 1989 is not old at all! Airlines replace there aircraft every 20-30 years, not every 10 years! KLM has MANY 747s from 1989, and I've flown them many times, and they are just great.

10 years is not old for an aircraft. In fact, thats relatively new.

Where on Boeing's web site does it say that SIA won't be getting any 747X's? If it's true, that's too bad. No other aircraft offers that capacity and range. The A380 can seat 555, but only for 8000nm. A 345 could make the JFK flight, but I don't know if they'll be able to keep all 300 passengers + cargo.

SIA did have two proposals from Airbus and Boeing when SIA wanted to have new orders for large planes last year.

Boeing showed the SIA officials the proposed B747X while Airbus showed them A3XX (now A380) proposal

Then SIA made the decision - 10 firm orders and 15 options for A380 aircraft.

It also ordered 8 B747-400F for cargo operations - to supplement to existing 9 MegaArk (B747-400F)

SIA has 36 B747-400s (excluding B747-400F) in operation, 3 yet to be delivered and 9 options for B747-400.

All we do is to wait for the remaining options for B747-400 to change to firm orders.

:P

Leave this to SIA executives.
