PA103, SR111 - Coincidence?

Mon Mar 12, 2001 11:09 am

Okay, first of all, this is not a conspiracy theory or anything else - I would just like to hear your opinion on the following ....

On December 21st, 1988 Pan Am 103 was brought down by a bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland.

On September 2nd, 1998 Swissair 111 crashed into the sea near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

These are facts that we are all painfully aware. But did you know that if you convert December 21st, 1988 into the Islamic (Hijri) Calendar, this happened on the 11th day of the 5th month (Jumaada al-awal) of the year 1409. It gets more interesting if you convert the latter date (Sept 2nd, 1998) into the Hijri calendar - this day was the 11th day of the 5th month (Jumaada al-awal) of the year 1419 - thus making it the 10th anniversary of the PA103 crash. So - 12/21/1988 AD = 5/11/1409 AH and 9/2/1998 AD = 5/11/1419 AH. (AH = Anno Hegirae, years from the start of the Hijri calendar)

We now know that the SR-111 crashed because of a fire on the Kapton wiring on the flight deck, but - what are the odds of this happing exactly on the 10th anniversary of the PA103 crash ; even stranger, PA103 was flying to JFK, and SR111 originated in JFK. Can somebody calculate what are the odds of this happening? Can somebody say if it would be possible for somebody unauthorized to gain access to the Swissair MD-11 and somehow manipulate the wiring aboard it? I would not like to imply anything, I'm just trying to understand it myself.

Regarding the Hijri calendar - please note that the Muslim (yes, even Arabs) people follow this calendar and not the Gregorian one (the Gregorian), so it is not 'just a wild conversion'.

You can doublecheck the date conversions here:
http://bert.cs.pitt.edu/~tawfig/convert/convert.cgi
or
http://jade.webstar.co.uk/hijri/

Will you be on a flight either originating in JFK or flying to JFK on 5/11/1429 AH (11/3/2008)? I am sure I will not be ...

dcy.

SR111 and TWA800, took off at the same time, from the same airport in the same city, from the same runway going to the same destination which is Europe.
And I guess they had something else in common . Oh yes the number of pax and crew 230/230.

Threr hasn't been a crash originating or ging to JFK since 1999 so I think it's safe to say that the "badluck" has dissappeared. I hope that it never returns.

VirginA340, wasnt the Air France Concorde going to JFK? That happened last year so I guess you are wrong when you say that there hasn't been a crash originating or arriving at JFK airport since 1999.
PS The Concorde was going to JFK wasnt it?

Hmmm, in addition the timer for the bomb that brought down Pan Am 103 was manufactured in Switzerland.

Seems awkward but I don't think there's a link.

Interesting, but probably a coincidence.

G-kirk I can't belive that I had forgotten that one. Sorry. I hope that there are no more crases on flgiht originating to or from JFK. This is beginning to look very bad especially for passengers that soley rely on good luck.

Of course it's a coincidence. But I enjoy spotting patterns and finding them in statistics. There have been a lot of accidents in the airspace near Long Island / Eastern Seabord cos it's about the busiest airspace in the world. There was a huge number of ocean liners that came to grief there, such as the Andrea Doria.

There have been a lot of accidents in the Bermuda Triangle. But again, there is a lot of traffic. The shipping and aircraft loss rate there is a lot higher than other areas on the planet, but the loss rate is still exactly proportionate to the amount of traffic that enters the area.

PS TW800 had 230 pax and crew; SR111 had 229.

How many planes do daily depart from / arrive to JFK? How many of them have about (or even exactly) 230 passengers and crew aboard? How many accidents happened in the same day of the year (by the Gregorian calendar, so don't even bother to look for the others)? And so on...
