Will CX Go For The B 747-400LR? Or More B 744s?

Mon Mar 12, 2001 1:50 pm

Hi everyone. We have just had a discussion about whether or not Singapore Airlines will go for more B 747-400s. Or even the B 747-400LR. Which I strongly believe that they will.

Let us now talk about Cathay Pacific.

For quite a number of years, Cathay Pacific has not purchased the B 747-400s for Passengers Mode. How come?

I think it is time for them to go for more B 747-400s as this would be better for them for future fleet expansions to Europe or to the United States.

I think they should even go for the B 747-400LR. Why? That would allow them to open up routes like HKG-JFK, or HKG-EWR to compete with United Airlines as well as Continental. Also, more passengers can be carried on flights from Hong Kong to Toronto, without the need to stop over at Anchorage, Alaska with an A 340-400.

What do you guys think?

Will Cathay Pacific go for more B 747-400s? Or even the B 747-400LR?

First of all, there is no such thing as an A340-400, but I think you just made a typo so no big deal.

Cathay seems to be loyal to Airbus, with more orders coming for the A330.
The B747-400LR is a bit large for "opening up" new very-long range routes...the A340-500 is more sensibly sized for such duty. I think it would be much more likely for Cathay to order that aircraft.

I agree with CPDC10-30 totally. The A345 would seem to be a very likely choice and a very good a/c.

It is highly unlikely that Cathay will be getting anymore 747-400s. If anything, they are looking to REPLACE their 747-400's. Although this may not happen anytime soon. I believe that a mix of A346's and A380's will serve Cathay's needs quite well.

Political considerations require CX to buy some Boeing aircraft regardless of how well their Airbus aircraft perform.

A 340-300 I mean.

Well, Cathay Pacific has purchased the B 777-300. They are currently looking into the B 777-200ER/LR. I have a feeling that they will not be getting the A 380 but a mixture of B 747-400/400LR/X Stretch.

Just my 2 cents!

But why? I don't mind you expressing your opinions, but please at least give reasons.

Political !? This is Hong Kong, not China, most importantly, Cathay is mainly British owned, so how does cathay's planes interfere with the Mainland Chinese Government ? And if it really comes to political, Cathay would be more likely to buy Airbus than Boeing because of British Influence , which had already happened when Cathay switched to the RR powered Tristars from the DC10 which she had already dicided to buy but yet to place an official order.

Cathay was supposed to place a large order for A330, A340 and A380 series aircraft month or so ago but cancelled it due to the cooling down of the U.S. economy. If they are going to order any 747s it would most likely be 6 747-400Fs. This being said, Boeing has redesigned what the 747X's wing is going to look like and changed other critical designs that will be employed into the aircraft. Maybe CX would be interested?

Hopefully, CX will go for the 747X , 747-400Lr as well as the 777-200LR/300ER.
