Cathay has never owned any DC10s. They were considering leasing some DC10s many many years ago, but chose the Tristar instead. They were offered a deal by the leasing company for the DC10s with engines free-of-charge. cathay nearly signed until they realised that the deal only applied to one aircraft.....so they bought Tristars, and I'm glad!!!
Cathay was just about to place orders for DC-10s when the British Government knew about it and persuaded CX to chose the Tristar with RR engines instead because Rolls Royce was facing Bankruptcy at that time. And so CX bought the Tristar.
A few years afterwards there had been a scandal that Lockheed paid one of Cathay's pilots US $80000 so that he would influence the Airline to buy the tristar.
