Well it is generally done in Pre-School, you sit infront of a teacher, who has pieces of paper with different letter on them. She holds them up (and as you wiggle around as you are so young) you tell her what letter they are. You have to pass this test before you go onto words and spelling. A side note, every pilot I have spoken too has passed this test, so if you want to career as a pilot I would take it very seriously!

Here's a nutshell answer for you...

An A-Check is done somewhere around 400 flight hours and consists of routine op-checks and minor a/c inspection.

A B-Check is a more in depth A check, similar stuff.

A C-Check is a really heavy check usually done around 5000 flight hours and takes a few weeks to complete. The a/c is torn apart and inspected for corrosion, NDT etc. Then routine op-checks etc are done. Test flights upon completion...etc.

A D-Check is the mother of all checks!! See C-Check and double it!
