Nice refreshment and good for hygene. Also, skin tends to dehydrate during long hour flights, so that towel should probably help.

Do most airlines do this?

No so. Continental has them. I've only recieved them on CO, and also on Singapore Airlines, both in Y class. However the quality of the towels was, of course, much better on Sinagpore.

In the "olden days", the hot towels were actually made of cotton and were usually passed out in the morning after an overnight flight. I think the main reason was to allow people to "wipe the sleep out of their eyes" without having to use the lavatory. Nowadays they seem to be microwaved paper "wet wipes" and are given out at what seems to me to be strange times. Why would I need a hot towel just after takeoff? Hmmm....come to think of it...the way most airports are these days....it might not be a bad idea  Smile

It is simply nice to freshen up after a long or not so long flight. Especially if it is a night flight. What surprises me is that some, not most, people just don't know what to do with the warm towel. It is amusing to watch passengers as they are presented the hot towel.
Try it !!!

Around the US I find that I only get the towels on domestic first class flights and first and business international flights. I have never had the towel on domestic economy seats. I think the towels are nice tom get before a meal, you can wash up with out every one rushing to the sinks in the lavs.

Domestically, UA distributes hot towels in economy on the JFK-SFO/LAX transcons. However, I've noticed some crews don't pass 'em out, even though plenty of towelettes are boarded in the galley.

This provision may have changed recently though as UA tries to find ways to save money.

The carrier for which I work recently stopped loading pre-take off orange juice for the Y/C pax as a cost saving measure. We still offer hot towels in all classes. It seems that airline managers these days have to balance the demands of the marketing department which wants to attract pax with lots of little extras, with the need to reduce or contain overall costs which when scaled up into a large operation can become a sizeable cost for the company.
It does not surprise me at all than an airline would stop offering hot towels as mentioned by UALfa@jfk, in order to save money. Imagine if a tray of towels cost just a dollar. Add the cost of a few trays of towels to every flight ,every day and the cost isn't just "peanuts" any more... which could get me started on another topic altogether, airline food!!!!!! Enough for now, Cheers,
M.

Besides handing them out before take off and breakfast service in all classes, SQ also hands out warm towels after each meal for First and Raffles passengers.

Lots of airlines I've flown on have hot towels which is refreshing, especially on a long-haul trip and nothing to dampen your body. And since it's usually kind of cold on the airplane, the hot towel is warm, especially if it's served before a meal, which I love.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hi!

Wet/Hot towels is a status to an airline that does that! But we must see too that in long-haul flights all the good airlines should give that item regulary, now in short to medium haul flights that's just common on first or business class, but in 1980 I flew from LIS to AMS with VARIG, it was a 2:45 minute flight and I got a first class service in economic class, just to know it was:

1 - Shortly after take of peanuts and coke.
2 - Before the meal wet/hot towels
3 - The menu with a nice cover and bonded with a gold rope
4 - Lunch served with pirex, and metal knife/forque and spoon - Fillet mignon with arabic rice - great stuff! All served with wine!
5 - As a great finnalle a great Brazil coffee!!!
This was in 1980 with VARIG on economic!
Regards!

On our SIA Singapore-Perth-Singapore flights, they served hot towels once before departure from gate and another time just before the descent in Y class. The towels are sprayed with some sort of cologne and smell extremely fresh and nice especially after a 4 hour flight, its a good refreshment.
