Re:- CX Or QF - SIN To Lhr?

Thu Mar 15, 2001 12:42 pm

Hi there!

I'll be travelling to the UK in a couple of weeks.

I was just wondering what people's advise was on to taking either of the above airlines. I really can't chose - it will be either Cathay Pacific or Qantas as I've been on SIA many times (in both Y & J class) and feel like a change.

CX will mean flying SIN - HKG - LHR instead of QF direct SIN - LHR. But I don't mind passing through HKG if it's worth the extra service on Cathay. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for your help!

Look forward to reading your comments later!

Best Regards,

Paul

Unless PTVs in Y class are super important to you I think I'd save the time and take QF.

CX definitely!! I mean, if you really want something different, go for CX! Qantas is nowhere near CX in terms of service and IFE. And the HK international airport, gees, why choose QF??
I can guarantee you that you'll have a much better experience on CX than on QF. Unless you just wanted to sleep all the way to London...

(I normally recommend SQ but since you've tried SQ a couple of times I think it's time for you to compare argueably the top two airlines in terms of service)

Hope this helps

You didn't say what class.

If Business go QANTAS, The F/A's are fantastic
If Economy go Cathay, like everyone has said they have PTVs there, though the service is a bit more 'robotic'

oneword revolves around you

For most people, flyig non-stop is the most important factor, but as it seems you're an aviation enthusiast, you might really want to visit CLK airport in HK. And I am quite sure the service on CX is better.
See my homepage for a comprehensive guide to spotting and photography at HKG

I will fly Qantas. I have flown both of them before, but suprisingly, Qantas treated me better. True... Cathay Y class service is a little robotic.

No offence, hope this helps

Of course, take Cathay Pacific.
The reason:
1) you can take a rest and walk around at Hong Kong airport since the SYD-LHR flight is too long. And it is easy to get boring and such a long flight.
2) you can have PTV if you like them.
3) It is generally cheaper for transit flights for most of the case.

I would rake Qantas.
First of all you cannot be guaranteed a PTV until you get onto the plane!!
Why waste your time going to CLK when you could spen your time in London??

My choice would be Qantas, Quite a good airline!!

Cheers

I would take Cathay Pacific.
You CAN be gauranteed a PTV on the flight to London, how about from Australia, what equipment do they use from there? A330 would be my best guess and so u will be gauranteed a PTV on that.
The F/A's are friendly anmd the food is great, the overall product is superb. And it is worth stopping in Hong Kong's Airport, trust me  Smile

Cathay Pacific Airways,...like many others say, you'll be guaranteed a PTV, great service and an awesome stopover in HKG.

It's up to you now...

I don't get some of you - why the hell would an aviation enthusiast recommend a nonstop flight over a connection/onestop? An extra take-off and landing, two different aircraft types and an extra airport! "Why waste your time in HK when you can spend it in London?" Oh sure, that precious extra two hours! How long are you going to be in London, a day? Anyway CX and SQ arrive in London within an hour of each other, the extra few hours is at the front end - leave SIN at 2359ish on QF or 1900 on CX.

Also, Airsnaps has stated quite clearly in the title and body of the post that he is starting his journey in SIN. What has Australia got to do with anything?!

Cathay is a much better airline - food is great, service is discreet (I hate those Aussie flight attendants being overfamiliar, it's sweet and friendly and typically Australian but I find it intrusive). Plus you get an extra take-off and landing and an hour or two to wander around airside at CLK. Frankly, I can't see the dilemma in this scenario. Enjoy your two great flights on Cathay!

Hey cedarjet not quite sure if you are canadian or american like me. But those sweet and friendly australian flight attendants are a darn sight better than our badly groomed frumpy old fake F/As we seem to have so many of hear.
Sounds to me your bitter on QF coz you didnt get an upgrade or didnt get in !

Airsnaps,
you live near Bukit Timah ? My uncle lives at "South Haven 2" . That's why the addy sounds familiar.

From a Singaporean point of view (and knowing a bit about the travel industry here), I would say if it's :

Price: MAS (one of the only few you can get for below/close to S$1000). Others cheap deals includes Thai and Royal Brunei. MAS has 33" in economy, Thai has 34", but no PTVs on TG.

Service, convenience: Emirates....pricing around $1200
easily a good choice. 34" in economy + PTV.

Cathay Pacific: If the fight is only between QF and CX, then take this airline, 32" + PTVs.

Unique combis: SQ to HKG changing to Virgin A340 (seen this a few months back). Prices are rather steep, closer to S$1800.

Actually I'm Australian. I don't mind Qantas and since they actually did upgrade me from time to time on the Kangaroo Route I'm not bitter (I was on the other hand in a ferociously bad mood this morning so my post was a little OTT), I just get a tad irritated when they plonk down in the seat next to you and start asking about where you're going / where you're from / your childhood. I agree it's a damn sight better than being ignored or worse by an American f/a but my favourite flight attendent is one who just gets on with it. One thing I love about flying is the chance it gives me to read / think / write / stare out the window. Anyone that tries to interrupt that is toast.

All I can add is that I did the SYD-Lhr route last June on QF and it was a truly awful experience, poor service,IFE was almost impossible to use and the F/A's (both SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR had an attitude problem.
I've never flown with CX so I can't comment on them, but it is safe to say that I'll not be flying QF long haul for a long time.

Hi there!

Thanks for all your comments!

Very much appreciated.

I think I'll go on CX for a change! I can always use Qantas another day!

If I can afford the extra cash then maybe I'll upgrade to Business Class too - ONLY MAYBE!

Thanks again!

Best Wishes to everyone!
