Remember Saturn?

Thu Mar 15, 2001 10:16 pm

I was wondering if anyone remembers Saturn Airways. They were based in Oakland and flew DC-8s all over the world. I believe they became Trans International in the mid 70's. Does anyone remember their 2-letter code?
My folks flew them to Hawaii from JFK back in 1971 and we were all wracking our brains. Thanks for any input at all.

I remember Saturn! I worked for them in 1967 at JFK. We had four DC-7C's that flew charters from JFK to Europe. There were another 2 or 3 DC-7C's based in Europe and a bunch of DC-6A's that flew "Logair" freighter runs for the Air Force in the US. The DC-7C's were retired at the end of the 1967 summer season and replaced with two DC-8-61's (I believe N8955U and N8956U). They acquired other DC-8's and Lockheed Electras in the late 1960's/early 1970's. I remember the Electras in Universal Airlines colors with Saturn titles but never in total Saturn markings. I don't remember for sure, but I believe they acquired Universal somewhere in this timeframe. They also flew C-130's in full markings. They merged with TIA sometime in the mid-1970's. During this time period there was alot of merging and one could see some very interesting color schemes at the old North Terminal at JFK. Saturn was originally based in Miami but moved their HQ's to Oakland's North Field some time in the mid 1960's.
By the way, search on "Saturn" in the photo database and you will bring up some of my pictures from 1967 plus others.

I also remember seeing Saturn at Lisbon, they where not quite common but I remember seeing at least one of them during Angola air shuttle when lots of airliners flew from Luanda to Lisbon. That one was a DC-8-61 series with full Saturn livery but with small Seaboard World titles. Another aircraft that I saw at Lisbon was a L100 Hercules from them too.
