CO To Operate ERJ's From EWR To ZIH, Mexico

Fri Mar 16, 2001 9:15 am

CO is going to be operating a through flight with the ERJ from Newark to Ixtapa, Mexico via Birmingham Alabama and Houston Texas.

Don't know about anyone, but the total flight/ground time is 8 hours 30 mins and I personally wouldn't want to spend that much time in a ERJ

Airlines are taking this regional jet thing way too far, in my opinion. I thought regional jets were made to take over flights operated by props. Flights like DTW-TVC or DTW-CLE. Not eight hour transcons that could be operated by DC-10s!

No one is going to fly from EWR to ZIH via a two stop ERJ flight, thats just a flight number continuing,Im sure that it may be the same plane all the way from EWR to ZIH but on the trip back the plane will have to clear customs and getting it back up in the air is not that easy.

This flight might be good for travelers from Birmingham, but EWR travelers would just catch one of the ten or so mostly wide body and 757 flights from EWR to IAH where they can comfortably make the connection to the ZIH flight.

STT757:

It doesn't appear to operate in reverse, and Continental are selling the flight and giving it as the first choice in availablity:

This is just 3 different flights with the same flight number.

Flight 1: EWR-BHM
Flight 2: BHM-IAH
Flight 3: IAH-ZIH

3 separate flights. Not intended for EWR travellers to go to ZIH.

CO is just flowing these planes north and south. They are aware that few travelers will choose to go all the way to Mexico from Newark on the ERJ, but the plane is going to fly the route anyway.

However, a friend just sent his kid on a CO vacation package IAH-CDG (actually, IAH-STL-EWR-CDG)...the first two legs via ERJ. For the lowest priced package, that was the only flight available.

The OAG has 4 daily IAH-EWR one stop flights via ERJ.

At Least It's All The Same Airline

Given the way codesharing has gone, it could say DL and be Atlantic Southeast...

Eventually, Delta will become entirely Delta Connection, and all flights will be operated by ASA and Comair with CRJ's.  Big grin

Hi,
Co has really pulled it this time! EWR-ZIH Yeah right!

I was in Aguascalientes 3 days ago, and i saw the flight from AGS-IAH with 3 pax. I talked to the co-pilot and he told me the load factor on most of the flights to mex with the ERJ's is very low, looks like they want to hog up the routes for the presence only, but looks like they arent making that much money!

Take Care
JAVO.

Not quite sure what your point is here ... ASA is now a wholly-owned DL subsidiary - exactly like CO Express which I believe is wholly owned by CO.

It's worth noting that it's largely because of the "ERJs" that CO serves more cities in Mexico than Mexicana ... not sure if the same was true if only mainline jets were counted.

Javo,
That's an interesting post. I wonder if its more heresay than fact (on the pilot's part, not yours). COEx can't possibly making a profit on all of these routes.

But the CO people "in the know" have written more than once on these forums that only profitable routes are flown.

If I were going to go on that route, why go through Birmingham when I could take one of CO's may n/s EWR-IAH flights? They are using the same flight number, but I see it more of EWR-Birmingham as one flight, IAH-Birmingham as another flight that goes on to ZIH. If CO was smart, they would have different a/c numbers, but I guess they want to say that they are the only airline to fly direct to ZIH from New York.

I'm curious how Continental pilots would view such a route. Sounds like the regionals are usurping a mainline route.
You're only as good as your last departure.

How many times do we have to say this, it's just 3 different flights with the same aircraft. The EWR-BHM flight arrives at a good time to serve the IAH flight, so it goes to IAH later. It arrives in IAH around the right time to served the ZIH, so it serves the ZIH flight. CO never intended for EWR passengers to to travel on to ZIH, they would just connect through IAH.
