TWA - Cairo ~ Riyadh?

Sat Mar 17, 2001 5:46 pm

Does anyone know what will happend to TWA's route's from JFk to Cairo and Riyadh ? Will AA keep these routes for themselves or will they give them up ? And If they continue them what type of AC will they use ? And would they still fly to Riyadh via Cairo as TWA did with the 767-300 ?

Since Continental and soon Delta have made their way into the Middle East market i think it would be a good idea if American continued with the routes, that is if theyre feasible Smile

I understand that Delta will be taking over TWA's route to TLV - perhaps others?

Just wondering~

What are the loads like on TW's CAI-RUH sectors? Or is this a route which has it roots in diplomatic/political motivations??

AA intends to keep the JFK-CAI-RUH route initially, but I for one will not be surprised to see it axed within the year. The Middle Eastern routes are not particularly profitable for US carriers and they are head to head with local carriers who have a lower cost basis and plenty of oil money to suck up those losses. TW was able to subsidize this operation with their fifth freedom rights CAI-RUH, but I don't believe that those transfer to AA after the TWA, LLC period is done and the old TWA operating certificate goes away. The loss of that traffic will cause the route to go red, and AA will pull out of the market shortly thereafter.

CAI to RUH must have been profitable because TWA has been flying that route for the past 5 years since 1996.

The AMR AA/TWA website says AA plans to keep TWA's airport facility lease in Riyadh and Cairo. They will most likely be flying there then!

DL was awarded the JFK-TLV route out right. They are not taking over TW's route. DL flight 96 using an MD11, will commence on June 1, 2001, departing JFK at 6pm arriving TLV at 1150am the next day.

AA has decided not to continue TW's JFK-TLV service as they deemed it to be unprofitable. However, had AA chosen to keep this route intact, then the JFK-TLV market would have been served by DL, AA, and EL AL concurrently.

I belive that if AA is too continue to operate the JFK - Cairo-Ridyah route it would be in 767-300 just like TWA . I dont think capacity is as big as to operate a 777 on the route . AA will have Egypt Air and Delta as comprtition on the Cairo route and Saudi Araibian which has an advantage over AA and that is that its nonstop.
