Thanks for this link, I have been monitoring this situation closely. I have been working the C-5 for nearly 8 years now. The engines are a must, the CF6 is a great choice. I would like to see more hydraulic upgrades. What do you think they mean by "struts repacked" I am hydraulics by trade, and they are already packed, does this mean they are just going to repack them?

Thanks Galaxy5, I will look forward to your reply. By the way, what do you do on C-5's?

The C-5 really needs new modern high thrust engines with better fuel consumption like the GE CF6-80 series to replace the current 42,000lb thrust GE TF39s. Every now and then a C-5A from Stewart IAP in Newburgh NY flies up to my ANG base in Schenectady NY. This aircraft is slow during it's takeoff roll and climb because of it's low thrust engines, it is a miracle the thing can get into the air because of it's size and weight.

TEDSKI...Can you imagine a 747 taxiing around on un-prepared air strips? Im talking thru mud, gravel, dirt, chickens, whatever... Can the 747 hold as much cargo as the C-5, no.... Can the 747 land and depart on 6000ft with ease??? Wouldnt normally try... The C-5 can do all these. Any more questions about the 747 in place of the C-5?  Wow!

hey 747 i found out that what they mean by strut repack is that they are gonna put in improved GREENTREE seals similar to the ones in there presently. also we are getting a MADAR III system put in. and TOLD will soon be computerized. lots of changes coming for us in the C-5 world

Because of it's size, weight, and engine thrust I don't think the Air Force has ever tried using a C-5 from a dirt airstrip.

I hope the new strut seals are better than the current ones. New MADARS III huh, I hope it is a whole new system instead of an upgrade, because you and I both know the current MADARS is rediculously ancient, and a pain in the butt to use. I am still curious about the C-5's because when I'm done with recruiting, I will be reassigned to the C-5. I hope it is improved by then!

Thanks for the info Galaxy5.
