Should AA Equip TW 80s With Aud/vid Entertainment?

Sun Mar 18, 2001 9:56 pm

As the TWA^A comes close, I was thinking that when the TW MD-80s get refitted with AA interiors, maybe they should stick in audio or maybe even video for their long flights like STL-SFO, or ORD-SJC. What are the opinions of the members here?

I have always thought this. American's MD80s have nothing in the form of entertainment so I doubt they will spend the money with TWAs.

AA will not equip MD80's with audio/visual. At a cost of over $300,000 per aircraft X 300 aircraft in the combined fleet this is a very significant expense. Most business travelers dont care squat about audio visual entertainment on aircraft

I agree with Pecoua. If they don't even have any entertainment on their own aircraft, why would they bother spending the money to put it on TWA's aircraft.

Do It To All MD-80's

I think it should be done in all MD-80's.

They would either install the equipment system-wide or not bother. $90 million is a lot of money to be spending, although considering AA's annual revenue, it is within reason. However, I don't see anything that would motivate AA to install audio/video on the MD-80s.

AA is most likely going to make TWA's aircraft into perfect clones of their own, minus the polished aluminum panels.

I don't see why AA would spend money on TWA jets when it has never spent the money to install A/V on their own planes.

That sucks, but if business travelers don't give a squat, why is CO, DL, UAL and US all moving into that direction of having their workhorses equipped? If anything, AA should do it to remain competitive. Although the 80s are on the newer side, it won't be long when making the choice between AA and other carriers that a traveler can choose between 737NGS or AIrbus or a skinny MD-80 w/ no entertainment.

AA777flyer: I didn't mean the entire M80 fleet, I just meant the part that will come from TW. The interior of each will be redone, so why not add some entertainment features? And then stick those M80s on the longer routes(ORD-SJC has plenty of 80s on the 4.5 hour route.).

Travellers don't care whether or not they will be able to see a movie on a flight that they otherwise wouldn't have seen, even if it still was in theatres.

There are 3 factors that determine which carrier one chooses. Price, Schedule and Loyalty (FF accounts). AA will more than likely swap out equipment on certain flights, either to a B-757 or to a 737-800 on the longer haul routes.
