TWA's Terminal 5 At JFK

Mon Mar 19, 2001 11:20 am

So now that AA will be taking over TWA, what do you think will happen to Terminal 5 at JFK. It currently houses mostly TWA flights, with 2 other Int'l airlines. Will United move all their flights to that terminal and try to compete more evenly with AA at JFK or you think Continental will come set up shop to JFK as a more competitive airline?.....

Well, most likely all TWA activity will be moved to the new American terminal at Terminal 8 and 9. A new renovated Terminal 5 and 6 will house United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, America West Airlines, Air Europa, and Kuwait Airways. A real motley crew.

I think that as Jet Blue continues to grow they will move to Terminal 5 but I could see UAL immediatly moving all of its JFK operations to Terminal 5 and Air Europa and Kuwait Airways staying there .

Terminal five is leased from the Port Authority,AA can either continue with the lease or the PA can void it and let someone else in there.

The PA is tearing down terminal 6 and the concourses for Terminal 5 and making one terminal out of both with Terminal five's protected building incorporated into the new Terminal. It's going to have about 25 gates for Jet Blue, UAL and anyone else.

IF jetBlue, United's LAX and SFO flights, and America West moved to terminal five, (which I doubt would happen) then what would happen to terminal 6, which is where they currently are? In other words, I think they'll just stay where they are, and the PANYNJ will possibly try to sort out what happens to terminal 5.

Continental has major hubs @ EWR, CMH, IAH, PHX, Etc...

United should go and even with AA. And 2 International carriers should stay where they are at and continue operations @ Terminal 5 JFK Hub.

Hoping for the best things to happen in Aviation, and Better News.

Where did you get that Continental has hubs in CMH and PHX? The only 3 hubs for Continental are IAH, EWR and CLE. What sources were you using? I know for a fact that Continental only serves its 3 hubs from PHX.

As far as I know the new terminal replacing 5 and 6 is going foreward. TWA was going to be a minor tenant there, with JetBlue and United utilizing most of the gates. From the information I can find on the AMR website is that for the shortterm AMR will continue to the facility lease in T5 for TWA. And eventually TWA, when it is intergrated, will be housed in the new AA JFK terminal which will be completed sometime later this decade. Of course there is a question as to which routes AA will continue flying of TWA's at JFK that they don't already fly with similiar or greater frequency. but presumably they would be able to move into a semi-finished AA terminal at JFK.

STT757's information is right on target. United has already announced plans and funding for the new concourse at Terminal 5, with 15 gates initially. Once the old Terminal 6 site is fully developed, there will be a combined 25 gates. "TWAneeds..." is correct: the airlines sharing that space will be a motley crew, indeed!

I wish United could match American's and Delta's plans for major JFK growth and beautiful new mega-terminals, but we're way behind in that race....

I heard that AA whats to uses T5 for Eage flight till it figure out what to do with it by the PA. (Using it for non hub carriers) What a waste of an Architectural landmark.

As far as UA's future terminal space, it would be wonderful if they could somehow house Lufthansa, Austrian, Varig, Singapore, Air Canada, et al., in the same terminal, rather than JetBlue, AWA, Kuwait, etc. That would work wonders for achieving true seemless travel amongst the Alliance.

I'm sure they'd each like that too. Oh well.

Thats funny Eagle flights in Terminal 5 and mainline AA flights in Terminal 8 , wouldnt that create a huge hassle as you would have to move around the airport too much . That sort of makes no sense so I really doubt in this happening . I hope with the new construction remodelation plans they dont adversely affect the beauty of Terminal 5 at JFK thats a landmark and Terminal 6 looked preety modern to me so why are they tearing it down???????

The Star alliance's main hub in NY is at EWR,UAL is the second largest carrier there and has far more flights from EWR than from JFK.

Also all four of SAS's flights are at EWR,most of LH's flights (DUS,MUC,FRA) are at EWR and Singapore flies there 4-5 x a week, and AC has many more flights from EWR than JFK where I think they have only one flight to Vancouver.

UAL's not worried about being number 1 or keeping up with huge terminals at JFK,look at what they're building at IAD and check out the Philadelphia International airport web site to see all the construction going on there.

If or when they take over US they will have North East hubs at IAD and PHL.

JMC1975..... read the Codeshare Destinations note below about AWA / COAL.

Im sorry to be wrong about Continental and CMH/PHX hubs, which is considered AWA hubs including Las Vegas(McCarren International), thnx for the corrections.  Smokin cool

Continental has flights with America West Airlines connecting in EWR, IAH, and CLE (CMH was for America West Airlines !!).

AWA has codeshare with TWA.

America West Airlines - Codeshare Destinations

"Codeshare Destinations

Through codeshare agreements with other airlines, America West is able to greatly expand its route structure to include almost 190 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Our codeshare agreement with Continental Airlines offers non-stop service for America West customers from Continental's Houston, Newark and Cleveland hubs. America West customers can also take advantage of our codeshare agreement with Big Sky Airlines, offering service to cities in the northern Rockies and Midwest.

Below is a list of cities available through our codeshare agreements. Fly America West to the connection city listed, then fly the codeshare airline to your final destination. Customers in these cities can also fly to any of America West's 92 destinations when flying through the connection city listed to Phoenix, Las Vegas or Columbus, OH.

NOTE: At this time, San Juan, PR and Canadian destinations on Continental Airlines and destinations served by Big Sky Airlines cannot be purchased online. To make a reservation to these destinations please contact America West Reservations at 800-235-9292. Convenient connections between some cities are not available and therefore are not offered.

This should explain that Continental already has hubs in these 3 airports/cities. So I thinks UAL, JetBlue should share Terminal 5. American & American Eagle both has enough space for right now (huge terminal).... so let them stay where they are.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm not sure about other Star members, but SQ won't be moving to new terminal where UA will be housed. They spent well over $100 million in collaboration with other carriers to build T1 at JFK, and it makes no sense to ditch that investment for a terminal which surely won't match the T1 in convenience and int'l handling capability.

Yeah, the STAR carriers are all over JFK:

Lufthansa, Singapore, and Austrian are at Terminal 1

Air Canada, Thai, and United are at Terminal 7, however United's domestic flights leave from Terminal 6, while UAL's short-range domestic flights leave from LGA.

Well, ummmm, yes, I'm quite aware that the other Star carriers won't be immigrating over to UA's terminals anytime soon for the reasons you described. I was just saying how nice it would be if they could (although I know they won't). I remember when they broke ground for T1 a few yrs back..

Now, just because EWR has more alliance traffic than JFK, it stills makes perfect sense that they should ideally be housed together at JFK as well. --I should know, simply because on every single SFO/LAX to JFK (and SEA-JFK) transcon, there are ALWAYS several pax who request directions to the other distant terminals to make their Star Alliance connection to Europe or S. America. (Why they simply don't use a LAX/SFO-Germany nonstop on Lufthansa, or a simple United LAX-FRA/MUN/DUS connection at IAD beyond me, but nonetheless, they still do a lot of UA-LH, UA-Austrian, or UA-Varig connecting at JFK).

But STT is correct in that UA is not interested in using JFK for an operation as large as DL's or AA's. That's what Dulles is for.
