US A321 At PHL (a Question)

Hi all,

Last night upon my return from FLL, I noticed that in the A (International) terminal at PHL, there was a US A321 there in a gate that is a transatlantic gate...obviously the A321's do not fly transatlantic routes...why was it there...a few weeks ago when my mom went to pick up my grandparents at PHL, they flew into PHL on an A321 and it came into the same gate in the A terminal I was referring to...my mom said that the flight was going to FRA...which is clearly BS...so whats the deal??

On 28FEB, my family and I flew to SFO from PHL on a US A319. I was surprised when we were told that we would be leaving from Terminal A. We left out of one of the Intl. gates too. My guess is that US is need of more gate space. They also have been using 2 or 3 gates in Terminal D.

It isn't gate space as much as the fact that it is probably flying an international flight next. Terminal A isn't just TransAtlantic. You can commonly see flights going there to Nassau, Aruba, etc.

They have gates. Half the time they aren't even used.

Actually they are using Terminal A gates since they do not have sufficient gate space at other terminals. Sometimes - but not always - they a/c have arrived from or are heading to an intl destination but this isn't always the case.

As far as unused gates, that's a bit misleading. Yes, there are times when many gates are empty, but due to the scheduled flight banks there are times when all gates in B & C as well as D2 & D4 are in use or in some other way accounted for. Terminal A gates are leased by the city to airlines on an as needed basis so they are utilized. There is also a full complement of US gate staff on hand in Terminal A to work trans-Atlantic services; before & after the intl. bank they are simply re-deployed to work whatever else is dropped on the gate.

One last thing...many of the gates cannot handle specific a/c types. The close-in gates on B & C are not going to handle a 757 or A321, for example. As the US fleet grows beyond their old DC9 & 737 workhorses there are logistical problems to be worked out.

How Will PHL Add Domestic Gates?

Speaking of PHL and parking, how is the airport going to expand domestic gate space? US indeed is crammed at PHL at bank times (I've been there several times in the past couple of years).

Once the new commuter terminal is opened north of Terminal E, it seems to me that the regional a/c parking in the triangular corner space formed by runways 9L/27R and 1/19, and the D/E concourses, could be used. Either D or E concourses could be extended for about 10 gates.

It's too bad PHL can't build a midfield terminal like DTW. PHL one of the worst-laid out airports around, and its prosperity will make the situation worse. The moving walkway between C and D concourses helps, at least.

At least it's got a decent 'mall area' and brightly lit food court. Can't beat that.

PHL is an old airport, no doubt. The layout is fine for O&D traffic (as it was originally intended to handle in the 1960s) but not easy for connecting traffic.

US' growth during the 1990s was not something anyone anticipated and now the airport and airlines are trying to play "catch up" to keep on top of things. Geez, just 10 years ago they gave up Terminal A to American since they had no international flights for their "International" terminal!

I have seen plans in the PHL media about extending the D & E concourses with "hammerheads" like B & C currently have. That would add numerous gates to each concourse. I cannot recall any firm commitment and/or timeframe, though.

Parking has grown into a real problem during the past 2 years. Garages are full by 9am on Monday mornings and I have recently been turned away from the remote lot on 2 different Saturday mornings as they were full. Even off-site lots are 100% full at a cost of $13+ a day.

The aircraft was parked at the gate that usually the LH A340 takes...there were plenty of empty gates though...although I dunno how long it was there for before I saw it (which was 11:45 PM)...as for international flights the A321 doesnt do any for US and the US International within North America gates are scattered throughout the 4 US terminals (A,B,C,part of D)

The new international terminal should turn the current Terminal A into more US domestic gates... also I dont think the 321 can pull into interior gates...it has to stay on the far ends of the terminals for wingspan reasons (just like 757's)...

On another interesting note, going into PHL for my departure to FLL, I saw not 1, not 2, but 3 A330's parked near Terminal A with stairs up to them...unfortunately all the construction prevented me from seeing anything else...

The current expansion is going like this:

-13 gates for the new international terminal
-38 gates for the commuter terminal
-4 extra gates added to 'D' in a hammerhead.

I do not know what they mean by commuter. It could mean as big as CRJ, F100, or 717. Anyone know?

BTW: My Dad said that they are thinking of using up some empty tarmac spaces for jets and having People movers for them. Can anybody confirm this?

1) I think by US' definition (and they will be the sole user of Terminal F - the commuter terminal), it will be the current US Express fleet. This includes props as well as the RJs. Don't expect to see F100-types over there as they fly mainline ops.

2) They already use people movers in PHL, which is why they are building the new terminals. Currently US Express pax are bussed out to the field beyond Terminal E from either gates B12 or C16. The trans-Atlantic flights use traditional people mover rigs to and from a/c that are parked south of Terminal A and the old TW hangar. Although you'll see US using the people movers most often, LH and BA take turns with them too. There's just not enough space at Terminal A so they rotate remote parking among all the international flights. Believe me, this is one of the biggest sources of complaint from pax, airlines and employees! Many pax are "sold" on PHL as being an uncrowded point of entry to the USA, only to wait for a people mover after an 8+ hour flight.

For further expansion there's still space over by the old Overseas Terminal, where you'll occasionally see jets parked. Maybe they'll make better use of that area someday, even though it's too far to realistically connect without a more sophisticated transport system (eg, train or monorail).

No, my dad was talking about using them for the other airlines, like United or AirTran. Not just the int'l flights.

I do not think they will convert any current Intl gates in Terminal A to domestic. From what I have heard, they will need all of the new gates plus the current ones. The situation may have changed, but a year ago, they had several other Intl carriers that were waiting to start service, but could not due to gate shortage at optimal times.

I'll add (though I've never flown through PHL) that there are a lot of airports that use international gates for domestic flights when they're not needed for use by planes on international flights.

Northwest operates in Boston out of Terminal E, which is the international building, and in Houston, I've arrived several times at Terminal D (formerly Terminal IAB) on domestic flights. Same for Miami - most of AA's gates there can be used for international or domestic arrivals (doesn't matter much for departures).

Are you sure it wasn't a 330? USAIRWAYS Flight 28 is a continuation of flight 78 from SFO-PHL. Flight 28 is PHL-CDG.

It was an A321...trust me...my mom also saw the same thing too a few weeks ago...
