L-1011 Faster Than DC-10

Tue Mar 20, 2001 7:03 am

My mom flew Delta flight 1949 last Wednesday. The flight is operated by an L-1011.
So, I go to pick my mom up from the airport and I haven't seen her in a week. She gets off the plane and the captain is walking right beside her. Mom had told him all about me and told him how much I was interested in airliners.
So, he took my mom and I in the cockpit and we took pictures and stuff. I aked a lot of questions and stuff. He told me that the L-1011 was faster than the DC-10.
I thought it was the other way around. He said the 1011 can cruise around mach 0.88-0.90!

Am I the only one who thought that DC-10 was faster?

Regarding the max. speeds, I think the L-1011 is slightly faster than the DC-10. Not a big deal, of course.

Hey Hank, Yep it sure is faster. And a heck of a better airplane

Don't know whether an L10 is faster than a DC-10, but I know the L10 was pretty quick. I remember coming back from Mahon on the jumpseat of an Airworld A320 with a very good captain friend of mine.

We departed 10 minutes ahead of the L10 and whilst we in the A320 could get way higher than the L10, the L10 soon overhauled us and cruised off into the distance with us just looking down at its contrail.

So, an L10 certainly cruises faster than an A320

I always thought the 747 was the fastest crusing airliner (other than the Concorde) at a speed of M.85 or M.86? Does the L1011 actually cruise as fast a M.90?

I think he meant that the VNE is m. 0.88-0.90.

727's used to cruise at .84 Mach. The 747 can do it efficiently and fast. I wonder if the L-1011 can really hit .9 Mach in level flight. Certainly seems powerful enough.

Yes the L-1011 can cruise at .90 it actually is the fastest subsonic airliner with the 747 being slightly slower. This is/has been known throughout the industry.

He meant max speed... the DC-10 will easily accelerate through .9 and cruise at it in level flight too if you leave the autothrottles off and dont watch it. The fact is, what they do efficiently...and both are much more effcient around .84...also traffic restrictions hold their speed down. The 747 is the fastest aircraft at efficient cruise speed still. Either way..the difference would only maybe be 10 knots if that.

Actually, I was talking about the cruising speed. Denny is right though, that is not a very efficient cruising speed and would probably decrease your range a lot.
