Let's Not Get Personal!

Tue Mar 20, 2001 9:39 am

From time to time on these posts disagreements about others' opinions have turned into personal attacks. I don't think we need to do that. If you have a disagreement with what is posted, state your disagreement using reason, and your knowledge and interpretation of the facts. Cite your sources and leave it at that. Remember, we all love airliners here, what we have in common is greater than that on which we differ.

Yeah I agree. Even though it seems to be the same few people causing the problems lately. I don't feel the need to say names, that would make things worse. KALB is right on, the personal attacks are childish. Nothing against the younger members, many of whom are very well behaved and actually end up answering many of my questions  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I agree. I think that merely being in disagreement is not in-and-of-itself morally wrong. In fact, I think debate is healthy for several reasons, such as it helps you research, and become well aquainted with issues. But there shouldn't be any name-calling.

I have also noticed shameful and un-civilized comments directed at younger posters. This is totally un-called-for and shames me for being 'older' and 'more experienced'. If rudeness is what experience brings, then I wan't nothing to do with it. And if I hear one more person write "where are your sources, can you prove that to me", when all the original poster was offering was an opinion, I think I will hurl big chunks.

Just kidding!!!!! I totally agree with you. I find that there is too much made of peoples age here. I find it's the lowest way to retaliate against a post, with out having to come up with any facts.

There's nothing wrong when a young lad comes along and offers his opinions, but it gets downright ridiculous when anyone (of any age) comes along and pretends to be someone they're not and posts complete garbage. But I agree- you shouldn't judge posts by the age stated in the user profile- many people purposely lie to protect their privacy. On the other hand, something needs to be done about immature posts by users who just say things such as:
-"XXX (their home airport) will be the centre of the universe"
-"I am FO for 757 and I think KBOS airport's runway is too narrow"

It's one thing to express your opinions and feelings, but it's another matter to pretend to be someone else and say things that are downright ludicrous and make an @ss out of yourself.

I second what Watewate says. Nothing annoys me more than to see some pipsqueak 15 year old argue INCORRECTLY for post after post and literally DRIVE AWAY the legitimate industry insiders who can contribute immensely to this forum.

I have nothing against 15 year olds who understand the limitations of their knowledge and post within those bounds. But when some teenager butts into a legitimate discussion about yield management with a half-assed theory based on nothing but playground rumors, I feel I am more than justified in putting him in his place (politely the first time, but progressively ruder if he persists with a dumb argument).

True story : My dad is pretty high up at an international carrier and posted some info about a codeshare agreement that he had personally helped negotiate. Some 5-15 year old (this was back before this became a 13+ board) told him that he was full of sh*t and posted some garbage about how HE thought it was. Needless to say, my dad was sufficiently pissed off and hasn't posted on this board since.

We all like airliners well then lets get our differneces to one side and help each other learn more about airliners and learn how to get along . At least we have something in common so lets avoid the fighting and the cursing because that leads us to nothing .

I am beginning to see more and more people decide to leave this board. I feel it is turning into a competition more than a source, it is a quality place, I think us members here need to focus more on the airliners and less on pissin someone off, before we lose more quality members.
