Have A Look At This!

It appears that the picture was taken from either the theme building or one of the hotels that line the runways at LAX. Either way, it looks like they are landing on the north runways. My question is this: Which is closer to the camera? I think it is the Brasilia, but sometimes, it looks like the 747. Oh well, now it occupies my desktop, so I can conetmplate it all day. What do you think? Great shot.

From werever this shot was taken from that place offers excellent approach shots . The passengers in both planes if they saw each other planes almost landing at the same time they must have gotten sort of nervous . But the picture at the angle its at its hard to see which one is closer the THAI or the United Ex . I would have to say the THAI .

It's hard to tell but my guess is that the 747-400 is closer. Do you know which runway on the north side typically handles jumbos?

Well, I have seen jumbos land on both, with the south-most north runway being longer. I believe this is 24L, which is usually used for departures, but can also handle landings. Let's keep the opinions going!

I think the Thai 747 is closer than the United Express EMB-120. I think the EMB would look bigger than it does if it were in front of the 747.

All four runways at LAX are capable of handling 747 departures and arrivals. Normally, 24R and 25L (the outer runways) are used for arrivals, but if there isn't much departing traffic, they'll bring in arrivals on the inner 24L and 25R runways.

He's using a telephoto lens, so he has good depth of field. However, objects will appear flatter and the spacial relationship between the 747 and EMB will be distorted. To me, it looks like the 747 is closer.

I'm about 75% sure that the 744 is closer. However, this raises another quesiton. Assuming these two planes are on visual guidelines, are they still not too close together for simulatneous approaches. 24L and 24R can't be more than 500 feet apart???

The 747 is landing on 24R. If you look below it, The junction of Supulveda and Lincoln appears. This is where the approach lights for 24R cross Sepulveda.
The picture is probably taken from the old tower, I think Joe Pries has enough pull to take his pics from there.
Telephoto foreshortening makes the shot as bad as the depth perception test at the DMV, but my take is that the Brazilia is landing on 24L, and is therefore in front of the 747, relative to the observer(photographer).
Simultaneous visual approaches to both sets of runways at LAX frequently have aircraft appearing to fly in "formation" on final.

Ok, who's next?

I vote for the Brasillia. If you look at the relative size of the windows they are aobut equal with may the EMB's a bit bigger. If it were behind the jumbo they'd be a lot smaller and obscurred. I don't think that thirty some foot long EMB would look that large in comparrison either. I've seen our Dash-8's parked next to DC-10s and 747s ate SEA TAC and there's a huge level of dwarfing going on there.

Cheers.

747 is closer. Compare the lenght of 747 and Brasilia. If Brasilia was in front, it would look much bigger.

This is a very cool shot! But it does seem as if though these two aircrafts are extremely close. Assuming the Brasillia is behind the jumbo, wouldn't that pose a significant threat to the smaller aircraft? What about those vicious tornado effects created by jumbos that I've often read about here? Maybe the "little guy" is not as close as it appears in the picture. Mrs Thai deserves respect!

The 747 is landing on 24L, you can tell by comparing the windows.
About wake turbulance note, the EMB-120 is higher then the 747, that is to aviod it. You always want to stay above the aircraft.
I also reckon it is at the top of the old tower, I too have been up there, and the view from up there is brilliant!

Hard to call, though taking 747 length at about 68m, and Brasilia length of 20m, I'd say the 744 is closer.....then again, looking at the cockpit and windshield size, I ain't too sure....one thing though is that it is easier to see the features of the 744, the Brasilia looks slightly more blurred and therefore further away......considering separation minima, the Brasilia shouls look a good deal bigger if it was closer....

The Brasilia is closer. If it was behind it would be in danger of flying into the wing of the 747.

I'd say the United Express EMB-120 is landing on 24L, and the Thai B747 on 24R.

Daniel

PS.: Votes stand at 8 for the EMB-120 vs. 13 for the B747...  Smile

You can calculate it if you know the distance between runway centerlines and the length of each aircraft. It takes some trig. Based on what I see, though, I would say that the 744 is closer, because that would put the EMB slightly above and behind it on the approach path -- exactly where it should be to avoid any possibility of wake turbulence. (Yeah, yeah, I know -- the runways are probably far apart enough to minimize wake turbulence.)

Thanks for all the responses! My vote is still for the EMB-120. I just can't see it any other way. I guess we'll never know. Anyone want to e-mail Joe?

In these types of approaches to LAX the smaller aircraft is always on 24R higher and tailing the larger one unless they are two turboprops mostly EMB-120's(at LAX) and in that case at times they go a la SFO.

Personally me I think the 744 is closer. And by the way did you notice that there are actually three aircraft on the picture Thai, United and an ad on the wall of the National airlines fligh LAX- Las Vegas.

If I had to choose I would look at the United aircraft from the window seat ,in the First Class of the Thai 747-400. Big grin

The 744 is closer. The length of a 747 is 70,6 meters, of an EMB 20 meters. So the 747 3.5 times as long as the EMB. On the picture, the 747 appears more than 4 times as long, which means it must be closer to the camera than the EMB !

I'd say that the 747 is clooser. Anyway, great shot. Hope there are more shots like this in the database.

Yes guys, the 744 was closer- landing on 24L and the Brasilia is on 24R. I actually did not even see/pay attention to the Brasilia at the time i shot it- i only saw it after getting the slides back. I am uploading another shot today that some of you will be interested in- this time on the south side of lax. Look out for it- Its a JAL 742 and a Gulfstream.

Joe
