Here Is Dateline's "Sophiscated" Tracking Software

Wed Mar 21, 2001 12:40 pm

http://www.avweb.com/sponsors/fe/index.html

It's called "Flight Explorer" and you use the program for $10 per month.

If any of you saw the "Dateline" follow up and when a CEO was asked, "when can we expect the kind of software that "Dateline" used to be available to gate agents?"

He answered, "I don't know."

If there is any enterprising gate agent out there with a laptop and a phone jack, they can easily use this software to find the plane.

I forgot to add that we use this software at Purdue. Students, however, can't access it. The professors only use it during lectures.

The software looks pretty reliable when shown on TV. In the time the airline is lying to you about the delay you can take that precious time and book with another airline and not get screwed over.

The software tracks flights in "real-time," and receives its feed directly from the FAA's ATC Center in Herdon, Virginia.

I was rolling when I saw that....Nearly busted a gut!!!

Where I work we used keep track of out flights using that exact same software!!!

Then we switched to FlyteTrax which does the same thing but the accountants like better.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Flight Trackers And JetBlue

Wed Mar 21, 2001 9:38 pm

we use the tracker on trip.com all the time. and we put it up for all the world to see when we have a delay, so our pax can see the status of their flight. we dont have to lie. that is such a negative sterotype about airline employees, and i wish people would get that out of their heads.

N509JB--

You mean JetBlue actually shows where the aircraft is, if there's a delay? You've gotta be kidding me!  Smile

That airline just keeps getting better and better!

After I saw the show, I decided to get the program...Flight Explorer...Its Great! And its ver accurate. Everthing a Airliner lover would want.
The service is 10 dollars a month, for 10 tracking hours a month, if you exceed it there will be an additional 3.75 an hour..If you love plane I reccomend this program to you..You will fall in love with it.-Brett

Niel,

The data actually comes from the Aircraft Situation Display data center in Cambridge, Mass.

We use it at work to see where our inbound flights are at. Saves us from waiting outside in the cold or rain needlessly. Big grin

I read about it on avweb.com a while ago... cool program I think! It'd be fun to listen to a Center sector with my avband radio and watch the action live...

For those who might be diehard users , you can get the unlimited service for (ouch) $250/month.

Who here has this software and what do they think of the slimmed down version?

All those Dateline reports are jokes. They lost all credibility when they put the explosives in the GM pickups to make their exploding gas tank story.

So, does this software indicate the reason for the delay? Or does it just show "ground" or "scheduled" (like the trip.com) if the flight hasn't left the ground?

Seems to me, the only way you could catch a "lying" gate agent would be if the software displayed "mechanical delay" or "ATC delay" or "ground stop". If it doesn't and it only shows that the aircraft is 31,000 over Peoria, travelling at 380 kts and is expected to arrive in 45 minutes, what good is it really?

It shows that the aircraft isn't:

a.) down for maintenance reasons
b.) going to arrive at the scheduled time because it's still flying
c.) going to arrive at the scheduled time because it hasn't left the ground yet at it's previous airport.

Does it alleviate the delay any? The big complaint is that airlines are "lying" about delays.

<< a.) down for maintenance reasons >>

Which flight tracker software provides real time information for the cause of the delay?

<< b.) going to arrive at the scheduled time because it's still flying

c.) going to arrive at the scheduled time because it hasn't left the ground yet at it's previous airport. >>

What value is this in alleviating frustraions of delays? So they know it's in the air - Why was it delayed? So they know it hasn't left the ground yet - again no inkling of the cause for the delay.

who cares why its delayed? you know as well as anyone that most delays are cause by weather. i wish you would get it out of yer head that gate agents are lying to you. im not gonna defend anyone who has, cause thats wrong, but i never have, and i wont no matter what. but you have to understand, maybe a gate agents boss is making them lie. ive seen it. and also, it not a good idea to tell the entire truth sometimes to avoid a panic situation. for instance, say flight XXX gets struck by lightning taxiing out. everyone is fine but a computer went out and the pilot has to come back to the gate to get a MX to reset the computer. believe me, you not gonna tell the people in the gate area that their loved ones plane just got struck by lightning. you are gonna tell them the truth, the plane came back to the gate to get a computer reset, and everything is fine.

the flight tracker is such a big help...BELIEVE ME. it chills everyone out to see where the plane is.

and while we are on the subject, i got beef with dateline. its that kind of story that creates irate pax. if you tell people that agents are lying to you, thats gonna become a sterotype, and the flying public will think that all agents are gonna lie.

bottomline is, untill you have done this job, just treat people with the basic human respect and empathy. we are humans too.

I like the idea of this program, but what, exactly, does it offer over trip.com and other free flight tracking sites? Convince me. I want to buy it.

Flight Tracking For NWA

Mon Mar 26, 2001 1:43 am

NW agents have access to an internal flight tracking system in WorldFlight. Since NW bought this from United years ago, I'm sure United gate agents will be able to access the same information in their system.

You must first know the ship number.
If you use a Westinghouse terminal, log in to WorldFlight by typing >SI:FLT [enter]
In AOP go to >ACCESSORIES, >WORLDFLIGHT
then,
>SON/clock number [enter], then
>your password [enter]

(If you don't have a password, call the Help Desk and touch the option for PASSWORD RESET and tell them you want access to WorldFlight.)

Clear the screen

Then type >CUR RTG XXXX [enter] (where XXXX is the ship number). This gives you the CURRENT ROUTING; i.e. where that particular aircraft WILL be going.

To find out where the aircraft has been (or where your airplane is coming from if you can't find it on the FID screen) type:

>RTG HIS XXXX [enter] This gives you the ROUTING HISTORY.

In both displays, you'll get the flight number, city pair, and date. You can then jump back into Worldspan and access FLIFO to see just where the delay (if any) occurred.
