LGA RWY 31 Approach

Wed Mar 21, 2001 2:14 pm

I have observed a new approach into LGA recently. It seems as though LGA has not been using the 31 Expressway Visual too much anymore. The approach to the airport usually takes you just east of the airport and a long the north shore of long island before you make a big 180 left turn over the sound to intercept runway 22. Now, planes are also turning right over the heart of long island to intercept runway 31. I have only been seeing this recently and I wondered if any pilots out there know why this new approach has been instituted? Safer than the expressway visual? any info or anyone who has noticed this please let me know.
