A340-600 Is Here!

Wed Mar 21, 2001 11:08 pm

This is great news, cant wait to see it in full colours.

From Airbus
------------

COUNTDOWN TO A340-600 ROLL-OUT

In just 48 hours Airbus will celebrate the start of a new era in long distance travel, with the presentation to the world of the longest and largest airliner built by the European manufacturer to date: the high capacity, long range A340-600.

Featuring a spacious all-new interior and the quietest cabin in the sky, the A340-600 can carry 380 passengers in unmatched comfort over distances of up to 13,900km/7,500nm. In addition, this aircraft provides immense cargo capability for even greater revenue generating potential.

The first new aircraft to be "revealed" in the third millenium, the A340-600 was launched in December 1997 alongside its sister aircraft, the ultra-long range A340-500. Designed in close collaboration with airlines, these two airliners will further extend the attraction of the market-leading A330/A340 Family, providing lower operating costs and better revenue potential than
their competitors, while enjoying total freedom of flight without ETOPS constraints. The A340-600 is powered by Trent 500 engines from Rolls-Royce.

The roll-out ceremony to be held in Toulouse on 23rd March will be attended by customers, suppliers and media from all over the world, eager to discover the latest in a series of outstanding products from Airbus. Indeed, the A340-600 is emblematic of the comprehensive Airbus family of aircraft, each of which are the newest and most advanced in their respective markets. Now functioning as a fully integrated company, Airbus continues to raise the standards, and to respond to customer needs in the 21st century.

Longer, larger, farther, faster, higher, quieter and smoother, the A340-500/-600 take advantage of the latest proven technologies to deliver the ultimate in long-range air travel.

With 127 firm orders and commitments from 11 customers, the A340-500/-600 are clear leaders in their category, with 59 per cent of the market at the end of 2000. The A340-600 will make its first flight in late April 2001 and will enter airline service in mid-2002.

To date Airbus has won a total of more than 4,200 firm orders from 175 customers worldwide for its comprehensive aircraft family, of which over 2,500 have already been delivered. Orders for the market-leading A330/A340 Family stand at almost 690 from
58 customers.

Now, the A340-500 and -600 are real aircraft! They should skip the A340-200 and -300 series and concentrate on A330 derivatives for their market.

Well, even though I am hardcore Boeing fan, I finally have to admit that this is nice looking plane aircraft. That big size engines does make this aircraft look much better compare to rest of ugly A340-2/3.

i like the sleak look of a a343 much better than this fat ugly fella. in my eyes, the so called hair dryers of a 343 fit much better. its the same if you compare a dc8-60 with a re-engined one. in this case, the fat cfm engines just look too big for the dc8. in the same way, the rr-trent look far too huge for the a340. its a bit like a woman whose silicone-implants were mistakenly chosen two numbers larger than intended.

but anyway, better too big boobs than a cancerous hubble on the back  Wink/being sarcastic

Why is Airbus building the A380 when it is just releasing the A340-600? I know the A380 is a bit bigger, but aren't they in danger of the A380 taking some A340 sales?

The A380 is a LOT bigger - bigger than anything currently flying out there (including the 747 but excluding all those freighters...)

The A340-600 is basically Airbus' competitor for the 777-300 and the 747-classics. It is not competing with the A380 at all.

It least with these new large A340-500/600s will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent engines and not small CFM56 powered hairdryers to give it the takeoff power it needs and cruising speed to keep up with the other wide-body types like the 747 & 777.

Cathay, Singapore, Virgin, Swissair, and some others.

By the way, are Cathay's recently ordered 346s already being built?

Press Release Seems Inaccurate

Thu Mar 22, 2001 8:22 am

While most of the Press Release is pretty accurate from what I've read, I cannot understand how Airbus can say the A346 will have the quietest cabin in the sky, when it's own A340 has smaller engines located the same distance from the fuselage. How can the significantly bigger RR's be quieter? I find it curious. It may be true, but that would be news to me.

Looks already great on the pictures, it will look even better in all the liveries by the Airlines which will get them.
To TEDSKI, the current A340's have enough power and perform their duty great all the time. At least as good as the B777 and B747.

The current CFM56-5C4 powered A340-200/300s are slower than the other wide-body types such as the 747, 777, DC-10/MD-11 & L-1011. It is two hours slower reaching it's destination than the other types. The new RR Trent 500 powered A340-500/600 will finally be able to keep up with the other types on trans-Atlantic flights.

In my opinion, the mighty CFM engines in A343 looks much better and elegant as compared to the Trent 500 that looks like Trent 800 engines, definately looks a bit too big and wired. Hopefully the fully painted aircraft will looks much better.

P&M- I think TEDSKI is referring to the longer flight times on ultra-long-range flights, ie- Singapore/ Hong Kong-Europe, not the shorter Trans-Atlantic flights. I recall that the slower speed was a major reason why SIA ordered more 777s a few years ago to replace their A343s.

Cathay operates the HKG - Vancouver route using both 744's and A340's and the A340 trip is only slower by 30 minutes. But it depends on the airlines policies on cruise speeds for various different types. I think the average for the A340 is mach 0.80 The 2 hours statement is way off.

RE: Navion,

The A340-500/600 wings are strectched by adding wing root inserts, not by stretching the tips, so most probably the inboard engines would be a bit further from the fuselage (but I am not 100% sure).

Secondly the Trent 500 is an engine of MUCH higher bypass ratio, and the bypass air effectivly cuts down the noise coming from the hot exhaust air.

hope that helps

Thank goodness. An airliner that has more than two engines. It was getting a little dull there.

How about another three-holer!

I guess with all the power that they can stuff into a couple engines, due to technology, it will be rare to see many more new designs with more than two powerplants. Sad
Ding! You are now free to keep supporting Frontier.

A new customer for the A340-500 was added today: Khalifa today announced an order for 3 A340-500s. There's a separate thread on this.

BTW: let's not start the old 'the A340 is underpowered and rediculously slow' thing again, it's really getting old.

BTW

Fri Mar 23, 2001 6:17 am

Since the new A340-500/600 is getting RR Trent 500 series engines with close to 60,000lbs thrust, nobody will say the underpowered word anymore because finally this aircraft will have the power it needs for takeoff and cruising speed to keep with the other wide-body types.

TEDSKI, since you generalize the 340 reaching it's destination two hours slower than the other widebody's, could you back up your statemen with facts ?

Aside from the VC10 the A340-600 has got to be the most graceful aircraft ever. I have just seen pictures of the rollout on the Airbus Website and she is beautiful. Imagine what this baby is going to look like in flight!

Samspain,

some airlines, like LH and i believe VS as well, will replace their fleet of 742s with the new a-340-600s, so most probably, some of these routes will be operated by a-346s sooner or later.
regarding LH that could lead to the 346s serving BOS, JFK, EWR, MIA, ORD, although i doubt BOM.
some might be used for increasing capacity on routes currently operated by a-340-300s.
emirates wants to operate its 346s on the nonstop dubai-new york route.

If Olympic Airways was smart, they should have waited for the RR Trent powered A340-500/600 to come out, with almost the same passenger capacity as their 747-200s to handle the busy JFK to ATH route instead of purchasing the smaller capacity CFM56 powered A340-300.
