340-600 Pax Capacity?

Thu Mar 22, 2001 11:53 pm

Hi everybody,

many persons claim the 340-600 to be a direct 747 rival in terms of passenger capacity. Is this true? In other words, can the 346 seat 569 like the 744 (or at least 550, like the 742)?
I know this is just a theoretical question, but I find one class layouts easier to compare than three class layouts.

Airbus mentions a maximum capacity of 475 pax for the A340-600, but a typical seating of 380pax in a three-class and 419 in a two-class configuration.

380 is the quoted capacity, but this will be in different classes. I know the 744 can carry over 500, but how many does a 744 generally carry, 350-400? With a 30" pitch throughout the A346 could be near 500.

The A340-600 has of course like the B777-300 a 10% smaller pax capacity than the 747, but it has quite a lot more freight-room than a 747 and that makes it interesting for some airlines.

I have also read that Airbus is exploring or is actually offering the option of moving lavatories and galleys downstairs to give the plane an equal, three-calss capacity to that of the 744. I wish I could remember where I read that...it may even have been on the Airbus site.

It makes a lot more sense listening to what airlines plan than reading capacities on the manufacturers' websites. Both Boeing and Airbus grossly overstate capacity principally by using seat pitches much less than the market will accept.

For example both manufacturers tend to use 39" as the seat pitch in J Class when quoting capacity. These days an international J Class with 39" would be unmarketable. The average pitch is now over 50" in this class.

A standard 3 class 744 has more like 350-360 seats. the 500+ are mostly high density 747SR flown in asia. 550 seat is (excuse my crudness) a hell of a lot of seats even for a 747. Thats 55 rows of economy seats in a standard cramped 3-4-3 figuration.

Here is a good example. Swissair will have about 306 seats in an A340-600 aND THEY HAD ABOUT (please correct me if I'm wrong) anout 330 seats in their 743's These are both three class.

Believe it or not the A346 has more cargo capacity than a 744.

The A340-600 has double the underflloor cargo capacity of the 747-400.

Airbus would like to say that the A346 competes directly with the 744, but it really can't. Yes, it can carry more underfloor cargo, but the 744 can seat 30-40 more than the A346. The A346 is more of a competitor for the 777-300ER. Airbus still has no true 744 competitor.

What, only 475??? A 340-300 can carry 440, and it´s over 9m shorter!
Just for the record, 777-300´s capacity is 550, like the 747-200´s.

I agree these figures are highly theoretical because no one is probably going to order a/c in these configurations. But I find this easier to compare than with "standard" three class layouts: 340-600 = 380 ; 747-400 = 390 - what IS a standard three class layout? As long as you don´t say "standard three class layout means 68.5 % of the high density single class layout" these numbers are just uncomparable.

Apart from that, I find ILOVEA340´s example very good:

>>Here is a good example. Swissair will have about 306 seats in an A340-600 >>aND THEY HAD ABOUT (please correct me if I'm wrong) anout 330 seats in >>their 743's These are both three class.

because it gives me the common standard I need to compare.

Technically, the A340-600 is essentially a replacement for the 747 Classics, but with quite a bit more range.

That's the reason why I think Northwest Airlines (NW) may order the A346 to replace their 747-100/200 fleet. NW could order as many as 15-20 planes.
