United Has No MD80 Or MD90 In Fleet..?

Fri Mar 23, 2001 12:26 pm

Why didn't United Airlines order any MD80s or MD90s..?
Is there something wrong with them...?? Any ideas....?

UA didn't order the MD-80 for two reasons. B737 and A320.

United had 7 MD-80 at one time from the original Frontier Airlines. They sold them to Continental, where they are now. Guess the MD-80s didn't fit in with UA fleet planning department. Regards.

Make that three reasons...727, 737 and then the A320.

And how would that be that UA had the seven ex-FL M80s? That merger/acquisition never happened.

PS to others, the M80 was well into production years before the 320 was just a dream...

In 1985, UA had look at old Frontier for possible buy-out. Frontier was really in dire straits at that time. UA bought some Frontier's 737s & all the MD-80s. Old Frontier finally went under & UA got all their planes back. UA then leased the MD-80s to AirCal...AirCal returned the ships, and UA finally sold them to Continental. Regards.

I don't think United sold Frontier's MD-80s to Continental. United never was the median in that. Frontier was part of Lorenzo's Texas Air cluster#### along with Continental, Eastern, People Express and New York Air. Continental got the MD-80s along with some 737s directly from orriginal Frontier I remember seeing Continental MD-80s and 737s in Frontier colors back in the late 80s

I'll have to call you on that one. The last OC M80 was N481AC (49114, leased from ILFC). Eventually it went to NYAir AUG85, and then directly to CO.

The last OC M80 was 49113, not 49114...

Regardless of who has them now, I am positive UAL had MD-80's although they never once operated under UAL colors.
