Best Takeoff

What are your best spectacular takeoff aircraft ?? ....mine is the DAS Air cargo DC-10 outta LGW ,takes up the entire runway and just seems to clear the perimeter fence!great for standing under though.Also the City Flyer Express ATR-42/72 which when airbourne seems to be at cruising altitude half way down the runway!.

Of the ones Ive seen the best was a Korean Air 747-400 take off from London Heathrow, high speed and steep, SPECTACULAR!!!! Smile

Re DAS Air, a good friend of mine is a professional loadmaster and did one flight for DAS in one of their 707s (LGW-ATH-NBO-CAI-AMS-LGW) and I've posted the details of that eventful journey here before. But let me take this opportunity to remind you how they used to get the nose off the ground when they were overweight with poorly maintained engines: the captain would heave the control column back and forth to attempt to start a 'rocking' motion, trying to BOUNCE the nose gear on the tarmac to get some air under the wings and get the fucker to ROTATE. My loadie friend is very macho and proud but one time when we were talking about it when he was drunk he accidentally let it slip that when they got into the 'reds' (centre line lights: 'whites' all white, 'pinks' alternating white and red, 'reds' all reds) and the captain started bouncing the nose gear, a technique my friend had never come across at Dan Air, he threw off his harness and ran out of the cockpit cos he thought they were going to crash. He strapped himself into a seat in the single row in front of the G net next to an armed marshall and got into the brace position. As he pulled his head down he looked out the window and saw houses and trees just 100 feet below, not getting further away. He told me if they'd lost an engine they would have gone in a straight line til they hit a building or a hill. He tried to leave at Athens but due to the nature of the cargo (hence the marshall onboard) the aircraft was surrounded by armed guards and the next stop was Nairobi, so he decided to come home with the aircraft but it didn't get any smoother as the mission progressed. Search under DAS Air, you'll find more about them and it's all interesting.

Take offs are easy: throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Finnair DC9!!!!!!! WOW! I couldnt beleive how fast we got to our cruising altitude!!! Also ATRs they sure do climb fast.

When I'm in an aircraft, the best take-off's are those where the ground disappears rapidly and I don't see it again that close for several hours.

In terms of a/c, the 757's and the MD80/90's out of LHR make most other jets look like hover craft.

My first flight ever when I was four years old- I flew with El-Al from TLV to Cologne in one of their old 737-200's (we're talking about the early 80's). From what I remember we were rotating down the runway at breakneck speed and we seemed to have taken off at an almost vertical gradient, like a rockect launching up in the air. I know I was only four, so maybe my memory slightly exaggerated the experience but it certainly felt that way at the time!

About ten years ago, on a NW 757 flight from DTW to PHX. It was a cool evening and there were no more than fifteen passengers on board. It felt like a rocket to the moon.

I must say that the most spectacular takeoff I've seen is a TG 747-400 at CPH. I cann tell you that it was much funnier to see then all the small MD-80's and 737's that SAS fly out all the time.

The runway is somewhere around 5500ft long. Also aren't there some boarding restrictions @ SNA?

Mine had to be waiting to board a BWIA L1011-500 a good few years ago and seeing a Saudi Arabain 747SP gunning it's engines and roaring down the reasonabley short runway at St Lucia. It was more like i dragracer! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

and only got airbourne a few metres from the end of the runway, i felt for the fishermen in the shallows who almost were decapertated! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm still trying to figure out what that plane was doing there!

What's know as the viking takeoff in the military. Take a fighter, like the F-16. Full afterburner down the runway, get the gear up, DON'T climb, build airspeed to over 500mph, then just past the end of the runway, instantly pull straight up to the vertical. Wow!

Best takeoff, my first right seat takeoff in a DC3.......

BA747-436, please dont glamorize things, that 747-SP had enough room to stop following an engine failure at V1, therefore it also had enough room to continue the takeoff and be at 35 feet over the end of the runway. So if this was the worst case scenario, I think that you will find that he did a bit better than this on all engines.

As for what the plane was doing there, what were you doing there? I think that you will find that the answers are the same......

The best planes on takeoffs are the big birds, like 744 or C-5. Nothing beats An-225 though Wink/being sarcastic

The 737-200 is still one of the greatest takeoffs in my mind. The landings are pretty fun, too. I'm biased since I normally only ride on the old 737s of lowfare airlines due to a limited budget, but those birds sure are classics. I hope they are retrofitted and kept in service for a while to come.

An AA757 from MIA... the pilot took the plane and whooosh, we were all deaf, and slammed back in our seats. It was Amazing, then she did this steep ascent out of MIA i felt like we were going up vertical... it was amazing.

A few years ago an Iberia MD-87 performed the most breathtaking t/o I've ever witnessed since I was a regular visitor on the the obs.platform here in ELLX .
Man this plane was climbing almost vertically right after lifting off from rwy 6 for one moment I thought it 's going to make a stall.

For me it was a Finnair MD80 at dawn out of Heathrow, and most 737-200s tend to be rockets, especially one I remember from Gatwick (Transavia to Amsterdam).

Of course the real hotrod is the 757-200.

AirHongKong 742F out of Man! watched it yesterday and it went up like a dream! it was as smooth as you like and pretty steep.

Also USAIRWAYS A332 was really impressive

Nearly-Empty 747-400, WOW! There were only 40 pax on board the 744, man, did that thing make a normal 757 boring! Smile

My best take off was on an Aer Lingus Bae 146 out of London City.The captain briefed us on our taxi out to the runway. The aircraft lined up and the brakes were applied.Full power was generated by the engines for up to two minutes and the plane just leapt into the air it was great.EI133

My BEST take off was on an ASA Canadair Regional Jet from Melbourne-Atlanta.
It was an empty flight except for us and 3 other people. We literally shot down the runway and in like 10 seconds we were airborne. It was incredible. I thought driving in a Ferrari was fast haha!

For me, the best ever takeoff jet is the MD-80 series, omg it really J-E-T-S!! My take off in my one of my dream aircraft, Delta's MD-88, those engines ROARED up and we sped down the runway like never before and we lifted off the ground nice and easily, then practically faced UP, this was STEEP! Since it was from ATL, I saw my first parallel takeoff. It all started as we were making the final turn onto the runway, I saw a 757 coming in parallel on the other side of the airport. As the 757 was coming in, and evened up with us, we started to scream down the runway. As our MD and the 757 on the other side started racing, on the other runway beside the 757, was a 767-300 started roaring down that runway at the same time. So it was our MD-88, an arriving 757, and a departing 763 all at the same time. As the 757 slowed to a hault, we were rocketing down the runway, of course we reached our takeoff speed before the 763, but they didn't take long after us. It was spectacular to this a plane take off, and climb without having it go out of sight in a hurry. It was truly amazing. We stayed with that 767 for about a full 12-15 minutes. Until it made a westerly turn and we headed northeast. But was awesome, to see this jet take off, and go all that way with us, all in crystal clear viewing. I absolutely LOVE MD Delta MD series, LOVE LOVE LOVE 'em! Those twin jets sound and perform VERY AWESOME!

My best takeoff would have to be on a RR Trent 892 powered Delta 777-200ER from MCO to ATL. Even with a full load of passengers, cargo, & fuel the aircraft was very quick rolling down the runway and lifting off the ground with no hesistation.
