New Airline Colour Schemes

Fri Mar 23, 2001 9:42 pm

In the last few years, a fair number of major airlines have changed their colour schemes- some for the better and others not.
What are your opinions on this subject? Which new colour schemes look better, and which ones shouldn't have been changed?  Confused

United should have left their previous scheme the way it was. That paint job they have now remind me too much of British Airways & Canadian Airlines. Whoever had the bright idea of changing it must be color blind!
I've heard ATC people can't see UA planes at night!
Scary thought...I'm not taking any UA flights after sunset. Regards.

I like the distinctive current livery of United far more than the cheap old white one with the thick stripes. United never had a nice looking livery between the 50s and the current one.

Delta is the premier example for me of better staying with the old than bringing out a misguided new one.
Also BA: The "Landor scheme" was one of the best in the world. Conservative looking, yes, but in a very classy way.

Far better than the old colours on the other hand are the new liveries of LanChile, Varig and Cathay Pacific.

Na,
I absolutely agree with you, I like the new UA scheme very much and the new BA scheme I find hideous.
Here are some new colour schemes which I find dreadful or in some lighter cases less appealing:
-British Arways
-SAS
-Delta
-Swissair
-Austrian Airlines
-Finnair
-Saudia
-Olympic Airlines
-El-Al
-Air New Zealand
-Cathay Pacific
-Varig
-Aerolineas Argentinas
-Canadian Airlines (their new "Goose" before Air Canada bought them)

Here are some colour schemes which I am happy that were changed:
-Qantas (1985)
-ANA (1985)
-Lufthansa
-Ansett Australia
-United Airlines
-Northwest
-Continental Airlines
-JAL
-Air Canada

Thats all I can think of at the moment. Cheers,

RonE

THE EL-AL COLOR SCHEME SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN CHANGED!!!!!
It was magnificent, very elegant, perfectly beautiful on every point of view! The design of the scheme was great, so carefully adapted in order to fit harmoniously on every Boeing in the El-Al fleet. And the colors themselves were striking, the light blue was superb. In addition to these artistic considerations, there couldn't have been a more impressive way to display Israel's flag than on the top of the tails, in this bright color.

I agree with some of you, and disagree with some others.
I rather like United's change. The previous livery was a little too "pop". Northwest isnt bad... maybe just too dark but I miss the "Orient" thing wich was classy. Lan Chile's improved as well as Varig's. Virgin's is good, and also BA World concept... For worse?

I think the UA c/s today is much better then the boring white one. Other airlines that have changed to better c/s are SAS (I love the new c/s, especially on the 767) and BA new one Union Jack (I think it's called so, isn't it?). Yhe only airline that have changed to a worse c/s that I can come up with is DL. I really don't like the new "russian" c/s.

Toda Reisinger,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. In think the new livery is appaulling. A lot of screwed up things happen in our country, but this is one too far!!! I think we should write a complaint letter to Natan Sheransky demanding that the whole fleet be repainted with the original colours.  Big thumbs up

Hi RonE!
I'm happy to hear somebody saying EXACTLY what I think!
Most people don't care about the change of LY's paint scheme, although a majority shares our point of view that the old one was (much much much!) better. Perhaps they don't care because of the tremendously sad events plaguing this little Country daily.

IMO El Als new livery is just really dull in comparison to their previous one.

I absolutely love:

Air Pacific should of kept theirs because the new one is boring and looks dirty. I also agree about EL AL, they too should have left well enough alone.

Varig looks great. MUCH better than the old one. America West also made a big improvement.

I wouldn't be suprised if AA changed thier silver birds to gold!

Gosh, I still dont understand some of you guys who think Delta's new livery is that bad? I thought that their tail's waving flag is excellent and far better than old plain boring stripe? Well, everyone entitled to opinions and I ll have to deal with it.

I do like BA's new waving british flags.

Thumb down :

British Midland - I like old one better, new one is disaster
EL AL - Need some more touchings
Sun Country - Better livery but bad logo - ruined everything.
SAS - Too business type

Thumb up:
Delta AL - they are better than old ones.
British Airways - stick with waving flag.
Air New Zealand - neat tail
Air Canada - big improvement
Finnair - Nice looking

No improvement:
United - old and new are both ugly. I think the 60's is better
Northwest - cant find the perfect yet.
Southwest - I like both so cant tell which one is better

RE: 100% Agree With Na. And This: BMI Devalued?

Sat Mar 24, 2001 7:45 am

To me Britsh Midland devaluated itself from a beginning established airline to a holiday charter look. I like renewals in airline country. But please, this new BMI-aircraft colourscheme design is going too far. BMI: I like your new colours but the typefacing and complicated taildesign makes you a little ugly duck. I do not think this is a Landor Associates quality worth...

Just goes to show that you can't please everybody!

Although I'm sure you'd chage your mind if you saw the new BMI colours 'for real'.

Another newer colour scheme I find shocking is Air New Zealand's- very much like El-Al's old colours, ANZ were very versatile and "alive", and very much like El-Al's new colours, the new ANZ c/s doesn't do this great airline credit- makes it look tremendously dull and unappealing.  Sleepy

Farve- I hope NW does not change thier livery! I love the current one. In the right light, the colors just work so well together. One of the few non-minimalist schemes out there today.

I think that Finnair's new livery is better than older one.

RonE And Toda,Reisinger

Sun Mar 25, 2001 9:41 pm

Dear RonE,
Seems like we do not share the same opinion about the new LY c/s, I like it! I think its very clean and modern vs. the old one which was out-dated.

Now whats the "kesher" to Natan Sheransky????
In case you think he is the transportation minister..... U R SO WRONG!!!! and do you really think that even the Transportation minister can do anything about that???
You are so funny....  Nuts

And Toda,Reisinger, its so cool of you that whenever you post those c/s pictures you choose the ugliest new ones VS. the nicest old ones  Pissed.

PIA just decided to revert to their previous livery dropping the "whiteout" look theyve been sporting reluctantly on less than half their fleet since 99 Smile

Hi El Al 001!
even in your selection, I prefer the old ones! Actually, ANY photo with the old colors will look better then ANY with the new ones!! even if some of these can be beautiful. The first pic you chose doesn't astonish me: from behind they look the best!
I went yesterday to GVA airport to admire the 777; and as it had 2 hours delay I could also see the landing. It was highly impressive; the plane seemed to fly very slowly, it stopped still at the very beginning of the runway. Take-off was incredible: there was quite not a sound.
The 777 is the best-looking in the new colors (or the less bad!), he is even beautiful! The LY logo is too small compared to the size of the plane.
Just later a striking 757 arrived in the old colors...I would have been curious to see a 777 in this same scheme.
