LH #446 FRA-DEN Inaugural Flight Airbourne!

Mon Mar 26, 2001 1:37 am

As the headline says, Lufthansa's inaugural FRA-DEN service is officially underway!

As of approx. 8:20 MST, here is the latest flt info:

Deutsche Lufthansa #446
Departing 3 hours and 37 minutes ago

In Flight 987 mi WNW of Belfast, Northern Ireland 35,000ft 447 knots

Arriving Denver Intl, CO 3:06 pm 3374 mi ENE

Will anybody be in DEN to greet the plane in all its refulgence? Get a few pics?

What does everybody think of this service? Will it be a $$$money-maker$$$?

I'm happy for the service and I think it will be very profitable for Frankfurt and Denver.

Anyone have any idea what runway it will be landing on? Runway 16?

Thanks

Is the plane LH is using on this flight an A340?

I think this could be a very profitable route for LH since DEN is an UA hub. I'm just wondering why the route haven-t been opened earlier.

I agree with GOT. LH AND UA are going to make lots of cash on this route. UAL will also add a daily 777 flight to FRA from DEN starting in the summer (does anybody know what date?), so I think they too know that this route will be a money-maker.

I think this flight will be an A340 for a long long time. Dont expect to see a 747 on that route unless its in the winter ski season, and thats pushing it.

Does anyone think like I do, that this may really hurt BA not only in Denver but also Phoenix? LH will have the capability to draw all the connecting passengers too, possibly many of them away from BA. As we all know LH is in the powerful Star Alliance and BA is kind of out there by itself at least in Denver. Perhaps slowly, very very slowly BA will realize that in order for them to be as successful as LH in Denver and other markets its time for openskies in the UK. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Shawn:

Yes, I'm not sure if has been officially announced yet or not, but United is planning on starting their own DEN-FRA nonstop for peak summer travel season. It will be using 777's. United is updating the 777-200XI aircraft (noses 27XX/28XX) engines to have greater takeoff thrust to make Denver to Europe runs on hot summer day, due to the temperature and altitude of DIA.

This represents United's first intercontinental flight from its sizable Denver hub (codeshare operated by LH -- the only other int'l flights from DEN by UA are Mexico and Canada). It should do well, since the feed is there and there will be lots of O&D.

There are plenty of rumors circulating about a DEN-LGW nonstop, but I'm not so sure. They can't fly into Heathrow because Denver isn't covered by Bermuda II, and I doubt they will open up a whole Gatwick station just for this flight. But if they are going to open up a new station for this flight, they could add some other less-marquis destinations. For example, AA has to maintain a LGW station to have a flight to DFW (Not covered by Bermuda II and thus no LHR), so they also have a flight RDU-LGW. This is an extremely profitable route for them, since they have dozens of contracts with pharmacutical companies in the Research Triange with offices in the UK. Normally it is a 767-200 in the winter and a 767-300 in the summer, but this summer it is going to a 777-200.

As a side note, Phoenix service begins today as well (LH448/LH449). This is a big advancement for the city of Phoenix, as now they have another intercontinental nonstop to complement BA's daily 747-400 to Gatwick. They do have a very nice international terminal there (Barry Goldwater Terminal 4).

As long as BA keeps their prices down, which they have done (I saw DEN-LGW at $308  Wow! !), they should be able to compete very well with LH.

Just my opinion

So far, it looks as if the LH flight will be landing from the north on a southerly runway heading. It is still a few hours away though.

Although it looks like Seattle outside right now, they say the sun will break through today.

Yesterday, everything was ready. Gate was ready, and on the screen it was flashing "LH flight number to Frankfurt", and the typical other messages.

Gate A41. The DIA arrival board still shows it ontime at 1435, but that was 15-minutes ago.

Interesting that this flight is so new to LH, that they do not even list DEN as a destination on their website for checking dep/arr times...

There will be a big celebration at DEN for everyone with a "wild west" theme.

Will PHX have celebration also? LH is going there starting today also.

I hope for Lufthansa that the flight will be succesfull...
But an alarming sign might be that Lufthansa now promotes Denver in Holland with low prices of f 550 (around $220!) roundtrip till june, which is way below any other transatlantic offers in the coming peak time, and of course includes the connecting AMS-FRA sector.
But probably it's because of the route being new and unfamiliar... United also had some very attractive offers on their new Chicago flight in the first weeks.

I just dropped off the film to be developed. Hopefully, I'll have it tommorow.

By the way, did anyone get the registration on that A340?

I was there as well, for the entire ceremony. Me and my friend saw the A-340 land, and then we went and hung out for the entire ceremony. By the way, the registration is D-AIFA, and in today's newspaper they said that they'll name the plane City of Denver.

I highly doubt that a Lufthansa passenger plane will be given a name of anything else than a German city or state. There are over 100 German communities on the wait list and would be seriously pissed if that plane was named "Denver".

why do you doubt it? I think it would be very nice, and "City of Denver" sounds much better than for example "City of Aschersleben" or something like that. Don't you agree????  Wink/being sarcastic

I agree that City of Denver doesn't sound very patriotic to Germany. However, I also don't think it is very patriotic for America West to hire so many Mexicans (hence the name America West??)

Secondly: I heard that the a/c got the traditional "Water-Cannon Salute" after arrival. Anybody verify this? Thanks...
