Austrian Airlines?

Thu Mar 29, 2001 7:37 pm

What do you all think of this Star Alliance airline based in Wien? I am thinking whether I should choose Austrian or Lufthansa on a long-haul trip... Does Austrian fulfill the Star standard? Comments are very welcome on service, planes, fares, lounges, Swechat airport, etc.!
Thanks!

I took OS for the very first time last month on my way
from Brussels to Tel Aviv with a connection in Vienna!
Well, inflight service is very good and FA's very kind and
professional....I would recommend this airline to any
passenger...but the most disappointing thing is Vienna
airport, mordern but quite dull compared to other
places...I even had the feeling it's congested...!!!

LH or OS......uhmmm...where are you travelling from
and to ???for me, I would certainly take OS for inflight
service (better than LH) but I would also consider the
aircraft models used.....

ok, let's say OS 8.5/10 LH 8/10

I may be somewhat biased, but would recommend to fly Austrian. I think their product in C and Y class outperforms Lufthansa. Especially the Grand Class on long hauls is superb. Your profile says that you are in Helsinki, Finland, so your flight to Vienna will be operated by Tyrolean Airways, Fokker 70, which is a subsidiary of Austrian. I have flown with them to HEL many times and their service is not on the same level as Austrian's, but still OK. VIE is much easier for connecting flights than FRA, but that certainly also depends on your itinarary.

Operated By Lauda Air

Thu Mar 29, 2001 11:00 pm

Great, thanks..
I would take OS from Vienna to Bangkok, however, just noticed that those flights are operated byt Lauda Air and its planes 777 and 767, of which the 767 I wouldn´t be too impressed of on long-haul as it´s quite old-fashioned and usually not at all spacy inside... Lauda´s service would perhaps be quite reasonable though...

I agree with the before mentioned answers, but I can tell you that Austrian Airlines Group has faster connections than any other airline between western and eastern europe. They also fly to many cities that LH doesn't fly to, and vv. so it really depends on where you are flying.

have a nice day

if you´re flying NG, then you can really look forward to a nice flight, they´ve got an excellent service aboard and i only hace very nice experiences on them.
AUA certainly fulfills all the star criteria, well, it´s a starmember, so they have to fulfill the criteria.

Why does the Star Alliance allow Tyrolean and Lauda as separate entities? Austrian owns the majority of both. For example, United Express and Lufthansa's regional carriers are not identified separately in the Star Alliance promotional materials. Why is Tyrolean? I think Austrian Airlines is making a corporate branding blunder by maintaining separate identities and divisions for Tyrolean and Lauda.

Just my two cents....er, zwei Schillings.

Star Alliance Criteria For Member Airlines

Fri Mar 30, 2001 9:46 pm

What are those? Related to what: safety, financial condition, level of service, maintainance, ...? What if an airline fails to fulfill the criteria after it has already joined the alliance?

What about OneWorld and Qualiflier? Do they have a similar system?

Was there a single sentence in this post that wasn't a question?  Wink/being sarcastic

i assume that tyrolean and lauda are identified separately to the public because they´re two well known and highly recognized brands in their respective markets and so it serves the purpose of making star more attractive. in addition, this makes it look like that star consists of 15 different airlines.
however, on the inside of star, there´s only the Austrian Airlines Aviation Group representing AUA and NG, VO, and so star consists of only 13 airlines, so everyone who claims that star has 15 members is incorrect. true, it´s 15 different airlines but only 13 different management boards.

HI,

in fact i had about 15 flights with OS and even more with LH. OS lacks trhe network and the density of frequencies but in terms of onboard product it has a really nice and proffessional one. FA's are in my opinion the best you can find among european airlines. Entertainment and food& Beverage is excellent.
VIE Airport is small but lovely and nice to shop ( a bit expensive though).
Ask for a cockpit visit, they are very generous  Wink/being sarcastic

Have a good flight
Amir

P.s i will be flying with them next month to the middle east.
