The best inflight meals I ever had were on an AA DC-10 between LGW & DFW back in 1990. Coach was full and my buddy and I were bumped up into Business (sometimes it pays to dress nicely when traveling).
We started out with cocktails (in real glasses) before the aircraft was even pushed back from the gate. The FA's brought around hot hors d'oeuvres (crab stuffed button mushrooms, little deviled quail eggs with caviar and warmed mixed nuts) and refreshed drinks within minutes after take off. They also brought menus of the various meal offerings. There were 3 choices of appetizer, 4 entree choices, plus 2 salads and a soup. There was also an obscene dessert trolley that they brought around afterwards. I had the Scottish smoked salmon with proscuitto, melon and fresh blueberries, fresh caeser salad made seat side by the FA, a bacon wrapped filet mignon with duchess potatos and baby asparagus finished off with a delectable slice of New York style cheese cake topped with raspberry and chocolate sauce. I had a wonderful California Merlot with the meal and a Couvosier afterwards.
I slept like a baby until it was time for lunch about an hour and a half out of DFW. We had our choice of fresh deli sandwiches (turkey, ham or roast beef) with cole slaw or potato salad, a fresh fruit plate or a hot chicken alfredo pasta dish. Again we were offered a choice of soup or salad and another pass at the dessert cart.
Since I was used to traveling coach at the time these wonderful meals and exquisite service really stood out and they are still quite fresh in my mind more than 10 years later.
My worst meal was the breakfast that my son and I never got while flying on a Northwest 722 between BOS-TPA in 1991. We were stuck in the very last row on the starboard side of the aircraft (with no window and an earful of PW all the way). Our original seat assignments turned out to be a figment of the computer's imagination and my wife and daughter ended up seated up by the overwing exits. They got a choice of cereal or omlettes and sausage, fruit, juice and a sweet roll. There wasn't an empty seat on the aircraft and by the time they made it to the last row they were out of everything including cereal. The FA apologized and we were offered fruit juice and some pretzels. About 40 minutes later while standing in line to take my son to the lav we walked by the aft galley where two FA's were gobbling up their omlettes and fruit etc. I have never forgotten that.
