Canadi<n And Air Canada

Sat Mar 31, 2001 7:18 am

Yet another step to fully merge the 2 carriers has occurred. I'm currently listening to Calgary ATC and former Canadian flights are now using Air Canada as their callsign, rather than Canadian. Flight numbers still have not been adjusted (ie still start with 3, as in 3***). I understand Air Canada has been granted the single operator certificate by the Canadian Government. Regional flights are continuing to use their original callsigns. An interesting note, some of the pilots are replying to ATC simply with the flight number. Can only guess if they are doing it just to save time or if it's difficult to change to something that has to be most un-natural to them after all the years using "Canadian".

With regards to the single-operator certificate, I had read that this was to be issued effective April 1st. I have not yet seen any official notice.

My scanner is on in the background and the former Canadian callsign has been replaced with Air Canada (as you mentioned). This tells me the legal notice will be issued soon.

Guess the goose really is cooked now....it's a shame CP was a good airline, just poorly run. I saw that second last 767 stripped down to nothing in the AC paint shop today.  Sad

I was having Dinner with Canadian Airline's star 767-300 pilot Bill Carter who told me that they now wear the Air Canada uniform and they fly both Canadian owned and Air Canada aircraft. He said you might hear ATC call signs like "Toronto good day its Canadian, oh wait sorry its Air Canada 3008 heavy with you....." He told me it will take some time to ajust to the call sign but everyting is going very well with the Canadian staff at ACA. They are proud to wear the uniform of Air Canada.

At least I ain't happy with the merger.

By the way, how about the aircraft? Are all the aircraft in the past two schemes been changed into the maple leaf + Canadian + small goose scheme?

Not all aircraft have been re-painted. There are still a few combinations flying around.

Legally, Air Canada has until the end of 2001 to ensure that all aircraft are painted in its own name and emblems.
