AN-225 Almost Ready To Fly Again

Hey,

This is really good news  Smile! Quite a few of us have been waiting for this for a long time. It will fly for the first (second first) time at the end of this month/start of next month.

Here are a few interesting bits and pieces from the Moscow Times article (22nd of March):

KIEV — Ukraine's Antonov plane designing company said on Wednesday it had almost completed the renovation and modernization of the world's biggest cargo plane, the Antonov-225. "All work is almost completed — engines were set up, as well as all other equipment. Now we have to paint the plane and it has to fly in the last days of this month or in the first days of April," spokesman Andriy Savenko said

The superheavy An-225 Mriya, or Dream, will be fitted with new safety systems, navigation and communication equipment. Designers have said they are also reinforcing the aircraft's fuselage so that its bay can accommodate very heavy cargo.

The An-225 will be equipped with a new cockpit and passenger cabin, new ventilation and lighting, Savenko said. The engines were designed and produced at the country's leading Motor Sich engine maker. Savenko said the modernized An-225-100 would make an appearance at the world's largest aviation show at Le Bourget in France in June.

Have they put a new glass cockpit in?
It hints that theyve given her a new powerplant too, which is shame because i think the D18's sound awesome at full power: saw it at Farnborough back in the mid nineties, and have not forgotten it to this day. Took me about 10 hours to walk through the fuselage though!!!!
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Yes, but who will need that AN-225 (it is primarely designed for transport Russian space shuttle "Buran", and this project is cancelled)? Do they thing that they will get money, putted in repairs as profit any time?

Since I posted this on the Aviatsiya forum, I have since heard from Kiev, that there may be a short delay in the "first" flight of Mriya.

As to who is going to operate the 2 Mriya's. Well that is simple. Air Foyle, in partnership with the Antonov Design Bureau, under the moniker Antonov Airlines will be operating the An-225 on commercial outsize cargo flights; much the same as what they currently do with the Ruslans.

Keep an eye on the site below for more information in coming months

Can't wait to see An-225. "Dream"s don't come any bigger... If there's cargo that even C-5 or An-124 can't take, An-225 will.

I wonder if Russian Air Force might be interested in the type, for transportation of military equipment e.g. tanks, helicopters, fighters, etc.

In response to CHRISBA777ER - They took out all the avionics and engines, so basically it was like a carcass of An-225 sitting in Kiev. The Engines were used on other An-124's that Antonov has. So now they'll just put new D-18T's on An-225 and make it flyable again! They had no problems with such engines in the past, so there's no need to change the engine type. And I agree, those engines sound very awesome!

A question...how many "Dreams" were built???
One for sure, I know...but was there a second one being assembled, then forgotten for lack of resources???
It'll be great to see two flying in formation. But that might be just a "dream".  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

Two were built but only one was fully completed, and I think there are 2 more on the assembly line, but you would not be able to tell that they are airplanes as they were stopped just at the begining of production. But for now, and with the economic slow down, I think that they are only making one of them airworthy, with a possible re-fit of the second one.

With Regard to the engines, I do believe that they re-engined it with uprated, and more efficient engines. Motor-Sich has been working on re-developments of a number of engine types, and I thing the 225 was one of their latest projects. ALso I think that Avionics are also being redone, simmillar to what Antonov has just completed with the AN124 that was sitting in Mastricht. Meaning that the crew will be reduced to 3 or 4.
