Airline Pullout From Karachi

Sun Apr 01, 2001 12:32 pm

Hello all,

This thing is really confusing. Well, no airlines are pulling out of Karachi, Pakistan (OPKC) anymore but since 1990, nearly half the airlines have left Karachi, why? Surely BA and Lufthansa and Air France must be earning a good profit due to large number of travellers to Pakistan from these countries so what is the reason? Is it due to the politics that have revolving around the Sub Continent?

I read about two months ago that Air France was thinking of serving Karachi from March so have they started yet??

The main reason for all the airlines pulling out is the fact that the civil aviation has lot some of it's screws in KArachi. The landing charges at KArachi Airport are more expensive then Dubai for crying out loud, airlines are charged for the jetway that transfers passengers from the aircraft to the actual building (a cost which around most of the world which is part of the landing charges)--i mean think for a second why do most foreign carriers in KArachi have a turn around time of like 90 minutes. The fuel prices are way outta whack and the fact that the flying pakistani public have a tendency to trash aircraft doesn't help. One of the major complaints of foreign airlines into Karachi was the fact that there buisness and first class sections were always almost empty--not many airlines have aircraft configured to just an economy class--so they were losing out in many ways--if somebody in Pakistan's higher ranks were to look into this mess then maybe one day KArachi will regain some well deserved respect as one of Asia's major cities.

Well now, there landing charges are 2 cents less than that of Dubai.. and they have slashed the price of fuel upto 30% and that's why Cathay Pacific has started their service. I think that after some time, KLM and Air France will restart their service to Karachi. As for the Business class, it is true, almost 40% of Pakistan's population according to CIA world book lives below poverty line so... besides, I think this has given PIA additional revenue over the years.

I have been wondering for the samething for couple of days. Is it because the West somewhat associates Pakistan with Afghanistan? And due to the fact that oneway or another, they want to please the Indian Govt. which has been proved to be worthy to North American and European markets?

Air France have no plans yet of resuming passenger flights to KHI theyre operating 10 cargo flights this summer though, according to an AF insider the airline discontinued operations because of remittence problems with the state bank of Pakistan in addition to the multitude of charges, the traffic has always been there and in 1993 Air France was the first airline to operate the 747-400 to Karachi Smile

I doubt that non-govt-owned commercial airlines revise schedules to please Western political objectives. The answer may be a lot more prosaic - Economics.

India has seen a boom in international trade - primarily led by software exports. A large number of Western financial, software and high-tech firms have established Indian offices, conversely, Indian high-tech firms are doing a majority of their business in exports to US, EU and SEA. This means there is a lot of business pax on flights to and from India. Airlines make money on these seats, not coach low-price fares.
As Bigmo pointed out, if First and Business is practically empty on flights to/from Pakistan, airlines are less likely to continue with these flights.
