Mon Apr 02, 2001 12:07 am

I was looking at an avaition book. And it looked like they were mentioning a lot of diffrent airports in Moscow. Are they really a lot of airports in Moscow? If so, why do they need so many?

thanks,

Actually Zhukovsky is a joint use airport, there are domestic commercial flights from there as well.

Thanks for the replies,

Which is the main airport that for example Delta flys into? Also what is the need for all these airports? New York is a big city and only has three airports. Is Moscow bigger or more spread out than New York?

Thanks,

AirOne

The main Airport is Sheremetyevo. The reason why Moscow has so many airports is that it was the only major place in the USSR, all of the above mentioned civil airports handle AFAIK a lot of flights daily.

Delta flies into Sheremetyevo-2 (which is basically a second terminal of Sheremetyevo airport.) I flew with them on SVO-JFK route.

Moscow needs all those airports because of all the Soviet built planes that lose an engine or two shortly after takeoff and need someplace to land in a hurry.

hey. while I don't like russian airliners they are not all that bad. some russian airliners actualy have better safety records than say an A320 series or a B737 (there are a lot of those but perpotionetly)

That is not why they have that many airports in Moscow. What are you thinking?

Skippy208, I think that comment was very anti-russian aircraft. Where else can you find unique planes like IL-62 or An-124?

The Il-62 ain't so unique. It's a copy of the Vickers VC-10.
