The Greatest Airline Ever!

What do you think was or is the world's greatest airline.
(feel free to tell us why also)

My choice: TWA (the name says it all)

I was going to think Pan American World Airways but I am kinda biased since TWA is originally from Western Air Express, and for obviously reason, that I am choosing TWA over Pan American World Airways.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Pan American.
Reasons...Juan Trippe, The Clippers, The first Boeings 707s & 747s, The Pacific routes, & that great logo.
In my opinion, Pan Am just was an all-around classy airline. Regards.

Mr. 717---How do you know they are on-time 90% of the time?? I'm not aware of any statistics published for this airline. If they really had 90% on-time performance, wouldn't they voluntarily report it to the DOT, like Aloha does? Or did you happen to just see that the flight you booked was ranked as 90% on-time in the CRS?

I'd say SAS. Maybe because I'm from Scandianvia but also because it shows that small coutries can work together and form a major airline Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

I also think TWA is the worlds greatest airline. They probably have the longest list of aviation firsts. I fly TWA regularly and enjoy there wonderful service and beautiful aircraft. Its ashame I wont be for too much longer. We must remember this is probably the best thing that has happened to TWA and its employees in a very long time.

Pan Am.

I have a love for the airliners of the Golden Era; no, not the 707 or 747 but the Stratocruiser and Lockheed Constellation.

I realize that the Constellation was designed for TWA and indeed they had them in service, but nothing beats the combination of Clippers such as Clipper Golden Gate, Clipper Flying Cloud, Clipper Sovereign of the Skies (OK, bad example) and all the Connies to boot.

After all, they were (and, ideally, still would be) 'The Chosen Instrument'.

Certinly not American!!!!!!!! Why I hate them:

They harass and terrorize other Airlines. Airlines they killed are:

Legend
Sunjet

and probaly more. They have the RUDEST employees and some of their planes suck. I have had some good flights with them, but I am loyal to United along with others and they are certinly my first priority!!!

From the airlines I;ve flown I would have to say TWA all the way . Too bad they will disappear soon but they are the best in the air.
The best C/S must go to Saudi Araibian Airlines.

How about Aeroflot -

Huge number of aircraft
Great network
Planes like TU-144, TU-114 were both a part of its fleet.

As far as greatest world airlines. I would put these three nominees up.

Pan-Am
BOAC
Aeroflot
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

The best airline is the almighty United. They are better than American because they don't need to buy out other airlines to expand. United's last acquisition of another airline (PA Pacific doesn't count)? Capital Air Lines in 1961. Contrast: American bought TWA, RENO, Air Cal in the last 20 years. Count: 3 in 20 years vs. 1 in 40. All of United's expansion save the PA acquisition was by themselves.

And the best little airline? Why, none other than Aloha, the jewel of the Hawaiian Islands.

Pan Am might have been the "Chosen Intrument" but was certainly not the original trailblazing U.S. international airline. That honor belongs to a little known airline called NYRBA (New York, Rio, Buenos Aires Airways) founded by Ralph O'Neill which began service in 1929-30 until a hostile take over by Juan Trippes Pan Am. He built a remarkable infrastructure for his flying boat fleet to hop scotch from NY down the east coast of South America to Buenos Aires but Juan Trippe possessed the political clout to kill his postal contracts and made his play to take control. Pan Ams S.A. routes were very profitable to the end, thanks to the vision of airline pioneer Ralph O'Neill.
You're only as good as your last departure.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the First scheduled passenger flight was NOT BOAC. (in the form of AT&T - Aircraft Transport & Travel)

Aicraft Transport & Travel's first flight was in March 1919 from London (Croydon) to Paris.

HOWEVER, in 1914 - a little known airline called the 'Tampa St. Petersburg Airboat Line' inaugurated SCHEDULED airline service from Tampa to St. Petersburg...

Airtran has 90%+ on time rate I have read the facts! Airtran is on time! Anso, When I was at ATL there hub, all of there flights were on time! There were scatterd rain showers at TPA, AA flights were delayed when Airtran left on time! They are smart enough to think that with the 717 they could stay in air until the scatted rain passed or they could devert the flight rater than have passengers wait in an airport or plane! Airtran is coustomer one! They make the passenger happy! Airtran may be small but the service is mutch better!!!

If we are talking about "old" airlines that are not opperating in the same way they did when they were great, my votes goes to:

-Pan American World Airways: simply because everybody knew PAN-AM

-TWA: As mentioned above, the name says it all.
