Sabena A340-200s-Grounded?

Tue Apr 03, 2001 12:11 pm

After reading in several sources, including the forums here on Airliners.net, I was under the impression that SABENA had grounded their A340-200s while they awaited sales, as SABENA was focusing on the A340-300 and A330-200/300. However tonight at Boston-Logan was, sure enough, an A340-200, fully regaled in old colour scheme (a novelty in BOS, as most SN flights are on n/c 333s). Anyways, as it was dusk, I did not get a registration, but I am certain it was an A340-200, and I was just curious as to the status of these planes. Are they being brought out of storage, or was this just a sub? Thank you for any information.

I thought they were grounded indeed but I try to check this as fast as possible and let you know. There are rumours that apart from these two A340s Sabena has two other planes waiting for delivery at Airbus. Sabena cannot use them so that is another two aircraft which are not used. I am not sure whether these are the two A340s ordered last year but taken over by SR flight lease or whether these are A330s.

OO-SCW was the registration. It is expected to make its next appearance at Washington IAD on 03Apr01.

MEL is right about the registration. My guess is it was a temporary change of equipment, indeed. I might add I would be surprised if the aircraft had been changed back to the old livery, though...

The aircraft has made his appearance last week at NRT and MAA. It was used on those two routes. For once I believe.

TriStar,

I've seen this aircraft several times during the last fews months, and, believe it or not, it is indeed back in the old colors... (well, not completely, it's just been painted white, with 'sabena' on the fuselage and the 's' sign on the tail. No flags on the engines, etc.

Could it be that this plane temporarily replaces the A330 which was shot at a few months ago?

Both Sn's A340-200's (oo-scw and scx)were stored in Chateauroux (Fr). But "Charly Whisky" was taken back in service again since a couple of month's. I think it is to replace the MD-11's from Citybird. This contract was stopped in the beginning of this year.

Juul,

Thanks for the informative reply. Let me get this right... The tail is back to the old colours as shown in the photo below?

I haven't seen it, myself, but from what I understand from your explanation, the body has the light blue large typeset logo, but not the smaller and darker blue one on top, and the engines are plain white. Correct?
I'll be keeping my eyes open for that one... Sounds like good material for a rather rare photo.

The tail logo is just a sticker, like they do on the sobelair when they rent an a/c for summer season. It doesn't have the dark/light blue stripes from the old colourscheme, just sn blue. The same color is used for the SABENA letters on the fuselage. The rest is from "de witte produkten".

TriStar, you wrote:

Actually, it's the other way around. It has the small and dark blue on top, but not the large light blue on the fuselage.

I don't remember where I read this... but it was last week. The Spanish goverment is looking for a replacement for their ageing B707's fleet for their King and their Prime Minister, so they're looking to an replacement. The article said that Sabena's A340-200 were a good choice.

What do you know about it?

WiLdmanVzla,

That's the first thing I've heard about that. Then again, I have to admit I'm not really on top of these things. So I don't know much about it. What I do know, is that switch would make for quite a nice upgrade for the Spanish King and PM, wouldn't you agree?

Best regards,

Tristar,

I'm gonna copy what I read about those A340-200's... You can find the full article on Aircraft Illustrated magazine, february 2001, page 10 ("In Brief") :

"... Iberia has ordered three more Airbus A340-300s for delivery from February 2002. Meanwhile the Spanish goverment will acquire two Airbus A340-200s (probably ex-Sabena) for the transport of the king and Prime Minister of Spain, replacing two older Boeing 707s ..."

Regards,

WiLdmanVzla

I hope they sell them for good money, we can use some extra cash for the moment. Smile/happy/getting dizzy
