WORLD'S Longest Runway

Wed Apr 04, 2001 9:02 am

Does anyone know where the world's current longest runway is? I heard a while back that it was a 15,000 footer at Edwards Air Force Base, but I'm not sure.

Denver (KDEN) is in the process of building a 16,000 foot long runway, so will this become the world's longest?

Can anyone help me verify this?

World Longest Runway...

I never heard anything else about it, but supposedly, the U.S. goverment has base some where with a 36,000ft runway. I remember hearing that 2 Space Shuttles could land on opposite ends and come to a complete stop w/o coming close to each other. Like I said, I heard this...

Runway 04/22 at KEDW is in fact 14,994 feet in length. This is a concrete runway. The (much) longer runway you mention is actually ON Rogers Dry Lake.

The primary Shuttle landing runway is 15/33 designated as X68 - NASA SHUTTLE LANDING FACILITY AIRPORT in Titusville FL, at 15,000 feet in length.

and probably lots more where those came from.

I haven't sifted through all of these, but I'm guessing Upington, assuming we're talking about paved runways and not lakebeds.

Austin - Bergstrom (AUS)
17-R/35L 12251 x 150 ft. / 3734 x 46 m
This was the original air force runway.

As far as commercial airports in the US, my best guess would be JFK's 13R/31L at 14,572.

Edwards is about 15 paved and thenm another like 10-15 unpaved but groomed I think. so you could call it like 20-25K ft.

I think CFB Namao, just on the north end of Edmonton has at least one runway over 14,000 ft in length - and has been desingnated as a potential emergency landing site for the US Space Shuttle. If that is true, then it may be the longest runway in Canada.

Runway 17\35 at Edwards - the main lakebed runway - is 39,600 Feet long. Thats gotta be some plane that needs that length to take off.
