Why Is This Tristar Carrying A Spare Engine

Thu Apr 05, 2001 12:00 am

I was looking through the tristar gallery and found this rather unusual picture. If you look at the pic their is a spare engine under the wing.

Does anyone know the reason to this.

This is sometimes done to transport engines to more remote and less equipped airfields in order for the engine to be fitted to stranded aircraft. I've seen a photo of a 747 with five engines!

My guess is that it is transporting the engine to replace one on a stricken aircraft. When an aircraft lands due to engine failure at a small airport where the airline does not maintain a repair shop, the engine must be transported there somehow.

My guess is that they wanna be on the safe side in case they have an engine failure somewhere out there. Like a car's spare tire.

(Just kidding ...)
