Swissair Service?

Thu Apr 05, 2001 1:45 am

Swissair has traditionally been a carrier which has found a niche for itself providing superior product for (in some markets and classes of service) slightly higher fares. Some other posts here have alluded to a decay in the quality of their product in economy class. Is this true? If so, it would seem to indicate that the market is forcing them to compete only on the basis of price, and the core base of customers who might have paid a bit more for a better experience is disappearing. This is a pity. Is nothing sacred anymore? I have flown them only once, in Business Class between GVA and LHR and we had a hot lunch of filet mignon and the finest wines available. It's nice to know that's out there in times when you want to splurge.

I can only comment on their transatlantic service in economy on A330s. The way SR has configured these planes is close to intolerable. Very little legroom and very narrow seats. Food is generally bad. Service is VERY variable, can range from great to really unfriendly.

I realize there are going to be bad flights but I have never had one on Swissair considering I fly atleast 4 flights a year with them (for the past 11 years). I realize even the best carrier can have bad days considering I have been less than pleased with Singapore and Virgin and absolutely vow never to fly Emirates again. My experinces vary and so do others. I find Swissair and Cathay Pacific to be the top on my list and I hope that never changes. Swissair may be going down hill a bit but it is still far better than many airlines out there. I agree that the seating in the A330 needs a facelift but I found the seat still better than on VS's 747.

Mac100: May I ask which airline you are comparing Swissairs food with? I have flown across the Atlantic many times with several dozen carriers and I have found Swissair to be the best out of all of them. The only ones that comes close is Austrian and LTU.

The thing about the crew varying is true. I have always had great if not fantastic crew on all of my Swissair flights. Though my experience with others is a bit different. VS, BA, LH, SQ come to mind. I think its just the luck of the draw and I have been extremly lucky with Swissair.

These are just my experiences, I'm not trying to change anyones mind but I am trying to remind them that all airlines have bad days and every airline is susceptible to bad food, seats and crew. After all airlines are run by humans.

I recently flew SR VIE - ZRH and ZRH - DUS in C class. The service was still among the best in the industry. I think you can always have some bad luck with a particular crew, but overall SR is still one of the best European airlines.

I am totally missing basics and clueless about airline flying!

A couple of years ago when DL had an alliance with SR I flew them about 8 times all in C class. The service was good although the seat comfort and pitch was somewhat inferior to SRs competitors. The Food was average but the in-flight entertainment system was awesome. The FA's were professional, attentive, but not particulary friendly. ALL in all, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate them a 6 based on my own experience.

I have flown only intra-European flights and never had any problems. Meals were served on all the flights I've taken (8 or 10 in the past 2 years), including the shortest hops: on GVA-CDG (40 mins in the air) they served dinner with warm bread and wine.

Hey,

Swissair are not perfect, especially with cost cutting measures in recent times but they still beat nearly all other airlines I have flow.

I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

Believe it or not, it's BA (I know this sounds strange as it's also catered by Gategourmet, owned by the Sair Group). I mean even LH serves more tasty food. I fly BOS-ZRH about 6 times a year and the service on SR has been going downhill slowly for years now. I am not expecting gourmet meals for the price I pay for these flights, believe me, and the Moevenpick ice cream that they served before landing in BOS usually put me in a good mood. I was willing to accept all of this as long as the accomodations were halfway decent. I guess it annoyed me that they switched to new planes that are a such a huge step down (compared to the 20 year old 747s they used to fly on this route). I mean why on earth would anybody in their right mind do something like that?? The cabin feels about as comfortable as the AirMalta 720 I flew to Valetta circa 1982. My flights BOS-ZRH-BOS were absolutely horrendous (worse than my flight on AA from LHR to BOS in the last row with a broken toilet). The FAs were nothing short of nasty (both ways) and they seemed to hate flying these things almost as much as I did. When I sent a letter of complaint to SR it took them 3 months to respond with a canned email. Going downhill? Yes, they may going, going, gone soon!

I really enjoyed the A330 flight from NYC to Zurich and back, but I have to agree with Mac100. My service was good, and I thought the food was good, but the seats were so narow I thought I must have gained 50 pounds since my last flight across the Atlantic! These seats were made for people under 150lbs! I wish I could take the ecn seats off the Lufthansa 747 and put them in the SR A330 ( and addd the video screens). Tough to find a good all around combo!

My experience with SR lately has been exactly as MAC100 described. I used to fly BOS-ZRH-BOS back when they were using 747s on that route and the comfort and service in economy were exceptional. I did the same route about a month ago on an A330 and the seat pitch and width were indeed intolerable - the worst I have ever experienced except for Aerolineas Argentinas some years back. The food ranged from bad to average and the FAs were obviously wishing they were somewhere else, as was I. Never again, no way no how.

Indeed that does look great! That's on an MD-11. But hey, for $8103 (BOS-ZRH-BOS), the prize for about 2 rows of economy passengers, you might expect something like that. But the design of these seats looks retro and cool.

The economy seating on the MD-11 were good and flight attendants very friendly on both my two flights on the '11. Food was OK but cold and I wish it was warm.
