Aloha's OAK-LAS Service?

Thu Apr 05, 2001 3:21 pm

Starting tomorrow Aloha Airlines will start another flight to the mainland. This will be it's third and it flies from Kona-Oakland-Las Veags. Right now all of Aloha's flights to Oakland continue to Las Vegas. I relieze that Las Vegas is a popular destination from Hawaii, but why does every flight contine to Las Vegas? Not everyone is going to stay on the plane from Oakland, so is Aloha trying to pick up some O and D traffic (OAK-LAS) as well? The bay area to Las Veages market is very competitive. Southwest has 10 OAK-LAS daily and 6 SJC-OAK, AA has 6 SJC-LAS flights and UAL has dominates the SFO-LAS route. From HNL-LAS it is 2,760 miles and the 737-700 can make the flight, so why wouldn't they go for that? If someone will go HNL-SNA (new service starting in June) on a 737, what is 35 more minutes?

Sorry, what I don't understand is why they would have 3 connecting flights. Why not have a non-stop?

Las Vegas is a popular destination for Hawaii residents to go on vacation. Why there are not more nonstops I'm not sure, the only thing I can think of is that the airlines feel that a Las Vegas nonstop would have even less business travellers than to OAK and SNA, so Hawaiian and Aloha both schedule their flights to operate via another city. Hawaiian does operate nonstop flights to Las Vegas, these are charters for Vacations Hawaii, a Hawaii-based travel agency owned by a group of Las Vegas hotels.

A lot of Hawaii's residents love to stop by the bay area and the LA area when they visit Las Vegas, since a lots of them have relatives in California as well. My parents always stop by LA on their way home from LAS to visit relatives.
