Taxiway Speed Limits

Fri May 14, 1999 8:17 am

To my understanding, aren't there are some airports with taxiway speed limits? The most common is 22 knots. Are there certain airports with higher or lower speed limits, or are there limits at all to taxiways? Also, if such a limit exists, what happens if a pilot were to go over it?

I have not heard of an airport prescribed spped limit. But taxiing to fast is bad for tires, brakes, ground crew and aircraft safety. Plus you need time to do checks.
Its more likely an aircraft type limit, issued by the manufacturer.

There are no taxi way speed limits. I have gone 35 knots many times.

It's quite neat to see an Ambulance flight taxi by at nearly 45 kts.

Sometimes I have asked myself:

Will he takeoff from there??? (taxiway)

The ATC may request the pilot to expedite taxiway or to taxy slowly depending on other aircraft's movements on the ramp.

I have noticed that the Aeromexico MD-80's and DC-9's always taxi quite fast at LAX...faster then the rest?
