What Happened To The Old PIT

The X-shaped Pittsburgh International Airport terminal opened in 1992. The old, Greater Pittsburgh International Airport terminal has been demolished or
is it still there? What is the land being used for?

Next question.....

PIT is US Airways' biggest hub, with 504 daily departures. Does it count among the major East-West
connecting points like CVG, CLE, DTW, and so forth???

It is eminently nicer than CLE and DTW and perhaps bigger than CVG in scale of operations.

There were several ideas kicked around on how to use the old terminal, but none came into reality and the old terminal was finally torn down about a year or two ago. I'm sure the local residents of Moon Township are glad to have that eyesore finally gone.

A general aviation terminal/business park is now under construction on the site of the old terminal.

PIT is considered one of the major connecting hubs in the east. I always connect through PIT cause you can fly nearly anywhere in the U.S. nonstop. PIT also has nonstop service to FRA, CDG, and LGW nonstop. I think it should expand further with United.

I don't think it is the size of DTW, significantly bigger that CO's CLE operation and a little bigger than DL's CVG, but a little smaller than CO's EWR, AA's DFW and maybe a little smaller than CO's IAH, but I'm not sure on that.

PIT is actually US Airways' second largest hub. CLT is the largest, followed closely by PIT than PHL.

PIT has both east-west and north-south routings. LAX, SFO, LGW, IAH, CDG, BUF, DAY, BOS, etc, etc, etc. are all there.

PIT is one of the original airports to develope a "airport mall". The airport mall is a revolutionary idea for passenger to pass time and shop or get a bite to eat. The design of an "X" is also a revolutionary design which optimizes quicker walking times between gates.

PIT is truely one of the best airports in the US.

FYI: PIT would be considered a mid sized hub, larger than Memphis or Cleveland; smaller than Chicago and Atlanta. US Airways has an overwhelming presence at PIT with a market share of 80-90%. (about 275 jet flights and 225 express flights.)

US Airways' Charlotte operations have over 325 jet and over 175 express flights, more passengers than PIT.

US Airways will be fine without UAL.

Biggest domestic destiantion from PIT is PHL, with 413 pax per day each way. Largest west coast destination is SFO (8th larget destination) with 164 pax/day ew. Biggest market from DTW is MCO (558 pax/day). LX is their biggest west coast destination with 401 [ax/day. Average yield from PIT is higher than DTW (15.34 vs 22.15 cents). USair's yields from PIT (25.69 cents) are much higher than NW from DTW (18.37).

3.2% of PIT's traffic is international, with 65.3% of total traffic connecting. For DTW the numbers are 10.1% int pax, and 53.7% transferring.
