Delta Cancelling MSY-SLC!

Mon Apr 09, 2001 12:39 pm

Effective with the 6/1 timetable, Delta will cancel BOTH of its MSY-SLC/SLC-MSY flights. Did this route perform so poorly as to warrant BOTH flights being cancelled? For pete's sake, if AUS, SAT, OKC, etc. get SLC nonstops, surely MSY should keep its flights. New Orleans is one of the most popular destinations in the world. This is a VERY surprising, and dissapointing, move. It seems DL, which at one time had a mini-hub in MSY, has no more respect for the city. With the 2 SLC flights being cancelled, the airline will offer only 18 mainline flights...a number which has to be an all time low. Very, very, very, very sad.

A very upset Stephen in MSY

ah, the final dismantling of the Western Airlines routes has begun... Too bad... I never much cared for Delta, and loved Western.

Don't worry, I don't know where you are getting your information from, but the 6/1 DL schedule is not out yet and if the flights were to be cancelled it would have been known and announced by now.

I guess not a lot of Mormons fly down to Mardi Gras, huh?  Smile

I'd like to see Southwest start up a MSY-AUS-SLC-SEA round trip. Currently no airline flies nonstop MSY-AUS, so they'd have a monopoly on that route. Delta's n/s service AUS-SLC is only in one direction. Coming back you either connect at DFW or stop briefly in SAT, so Southwest would have a semi monopoly in that they would have nonstop service in both directions for that city pair. It would also provide quick one-stop service from MSY-SLC and AUS-SEA, two high-tech cities with no nonstop service between the two.

I'm not holding my breath though. Last year Austin got 3 new Southwest flights. 1 to SAN, 1 to RDU and 1 to BWI. This year, Southwest just added a 2nd n/s to SAN and RDU effective April 2 and will add a 3rd n/s to LAS August 5, so it looks like AUS has gotten it's allotment of new Southwest flights for the year.  Smile

The 6/1 schedule DL prints may not be out, but those flights are. I checked SABRE, and starting 6/1/01, there are only connections offered between SLC and MSY, no NS or direct flights.
