American Now World's Largest Carrier

Tue Apr 10, 2001 8:21 am

AA is now the world's largest airline. The following is a link to the story from MSNBC, http://www.msnbc.com/news/556915.asp?0cm=c10. I hope the rest of you AA fans enjoy this moment as much as I do. Now it's a matter of how long it is until the UA/US purchase is approved.

I hope AA enjoys a long reign at the #1 largest spot. They are a good airline and I wish them all the best with the TWA merger. I think slowly is the best way they can approach it.

On the otherhand, I hope UA/US is put down. UA needs to prove it can be a more reliable airline before it goes and takes on US. I still think US could make it on its own and be better for it (as opposed to TWA which was really at the end of the ropes)

I totally agree. I believe that the AA/TWA deal had to go through to save those 20,000 employees. I think that UA doesn't need US, and that US doesn't need UA. If United is so great, why do they need US to regain the title of #1 airline?

I am just as happy as you are RWally(if not happier) about this important day in aviation history. However, the UA/US deal should NOT go through. The two airlines have no alliance, financially, US is in great shape(unlike TWA when AA bought them) and UA is having enough problems on their own as it is. UA needs to prove better service, more reliability, and better customer service and the efficiency to run an airline. UA/US has no purpose what so ever. I say NO to UA/US.
I also wish AA a long reign and the best with TWA. AA has proved themselves to be number one and they are finally getting their chance.

Bigger isn't always better !!!!....BTW we just got our TWA ticket's in the mail today for our flight to Phoenix this summer... (beautiful tickets ...dark navy blue front with TWA double globe logo in a light blue with the red TWA lettering in the upper left hand corner and a TWA 757 in flight on the back)....it's odd though, we were ticketed when TWA was TWA and we got the tickets when TWA was TWA LLC ( a subsidiary or AA).
Even though the TWA itself will soon be gone, it's spirit will live on forever. TWA was the one and only airline that truly pioneered the skies.

From AMR Corp:

American Airlines now has over 900 aircraft in its fleet and serves more than 300 cities worldwide.

American's Fleet Size

Tue Apr 10, 2001 10:50 am

American had 720 planes as of earlier this week, but now I have no idea how big it is... TWA must have had about 200? Let's see, DC-9s, 717's, 757s, and 767s is all they have left. There must be a good 150 DC-9s, including the MD-80s, maybe more. 15 717. I have no idea.

UA and US probably won't be approved and it does not need to be just because of TW/AA. The AA acquisition
of TWA amounts to a yard sale. TWA would have gone
under without AA and would have been cannibalized.

AA didn't really buy TWA to become #1. It saw a lot
of bargains in the deal such as the St. Louis hub and
the additional, nearly new jets, and assets it could
use in the future.

As for UA/US, it would cause CO to merge with DL,
or possibly create a three way with CO/NW/DL, or
consolidation with HP and AS and that would be the
end of the US airline industry as a competitive and
vibrant place.

One possible scenario is the end of US/UA, and that
UA will snap up HP, shift many planes to IAD to beef
up ops there and cede PHX to WN.

To all AA fans, all I can say is:

Don't hold your breath.

Against all ads, the UA/US merger WILL go through.

CO and DL will never merge; Bethune's disclosure of "negotations" was merely a ploy, a smokescreen tactic. CO does not *ever* want to merge with DL.

CO and NW is a possibility, however.

What will the "Callsign" be for the TWA painted aircraft, until re-painted in AA colors, TWA or American? Thanks, Jeff

Well, if UA/US doesn't go through, for sure, in no time United will go after someone else, I already heard rumours this morning about UA in talks with America West, their fleet would work perfectly, and Delta has a strong interest in Northwest or Alaska, and says CO is not even being considered. After all these labour problems Delta is expected to make large aircraft orders(40 or more 777s, and 25-60 additional 737NGs, and 10 or more more 767-400ERs) and said it will release its' future plans for aquisitions. This is only the beginning of the merger mania, I hope Delta and United kick AA's AAss!!!!! They're not gonna give up without a fight, I GUARANTEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blink, have you seen US Airways' financial statements?
They're hardly in "great" shape.

US Airways doing better !?! Ha!!! Just check out their financial statement and hear from the employees who are blaming Wolf/Gangwall for the problems along with the previous management who caused this bluder in the first place. I also think that When USAir had the "5 Plane Crashes in Years" Fiasco.

Just look how much money in lawsuits and compensation that they had to pay to families and friends of those who died and in 1996 US Airways were fined millions due to maintinace violations in Charlotte and in their hubs of PHL and PIT. All airlines had their bad luck but with US it was a nightmare. Only recently they have started to improve but as far as their financial statements go they will be the next EAL. Their Captoal is diminishing and they need this merger otherwise they'll be like TWA minus Ichan 5-10 years from now. The future is not looking bright at all. For the sake of their employees and other assents they need this merger or they will die a slow death like TWA.

Though they're #2 now, United is still the worlds most powerful airline.

I personally feel that it is a shame that the world's largest airlines is among one of the most mediocre (in my own opinion)...every experience I have had with AA has been HORRIBLE.....long delays, rude staff, decrepate seats.....I know its probably bad luck, but still, I will never fly AA again.

Nrlcd...

On average, none of the things you claim went wrong for you on AA go wrong for others.

As I do not know where you stand on the totem pole in AA's AAdvantage program, all I can speak to is my experience of AA as the partner of an Exec. Plat member of AA's AAdvantage program.

My partner can avail himself of the CSR's at the Exec. Plat desk whenever he runs into a problem; he gets upgraded to business or first class on a complimentary basis whenever he travels on a Y-fare; he can use the miles he earns on AA to travel on some of the most prestigious carriers in the world, to some of the most exotic destinations; above all, he gets treated with respect whenever he addresses AA or oneworld pesonnel, be it in in the air or on the ground. In general, AA appreciates his business and they show it.

Now, his experience of AA may not compare to that of the average traveller. But, even for this traveller, I must point out that AA does more with its more room in coach than any other domestic carrier.
