Problems With PIA

Wed Apr 11, 2001 11:45 am

Hello all,

Following are the problems that I believe are threating the future of PIA.

-SABRE contract...I don't know how this works but yesterday, their system caused a glitch and 25 flights for PIA were cancelled.

-Frequent domestic and short haul intl. flight cancellations.

-Luggage handling. Sometimes the luggage gets lost.

-F27s, even though these birds are the only option in North, they are almost 50 years old and they ought to be shut down and replaced with Beech 1700, etc.

-The policy of letting employees and their contacts fly for free worldwide.

-Too many employees. 22,000 in total.

-Internal corruption. Face it, PIA's Intl. flights are almost always full so where does the revenue go?

I hope what I am writing is acceptable,

Being In Pakistan Is No Help, Either...

...at least not until the government situation stabilizes.

One of these days, PIA may return to Washington, DC. But I'm not holding my breath...

That's so true. Government is everything for Pakistan these days. But, it keeps getting worse there.
Anyways, lets see what PIA is up to next.
Warm Regards,

I'm not all too familiar with PIA situation, but here's my 2 cents.

-F27s maybe old, but as long as they are not causing excessive delays/cancellations, there's no reason to replace them. Also, PIA isn't in the best shape financially speaking and I doubt they can place a substantial order for brand new or relatively new planes now.
-All airlines allow employees fly for free. But letting friends of employees fly for free does sound excessive. But as long as they're not bumping revenue pax off the plane, I don't see how this is the main reason for PIA's dismal financial status.
-22,000 employees is a lot for a company of PIA's size. But PIA won't take the effort to trim the fat unless it's privatized. And I'm not holding my breath on that.
-Corruption... Something you'll have to live with operating an airline (or any company for that mattera) in such an unstable environment.

-Luggage handling. Sometimes the luggage gets lost.

At the check in at ISB, some relatives travelling on PK794 (departs Sunday morning) got into an arguement with the check in staff. Apparently things got a bit heated and words were exchanged. Probably wanting to take more luggage then they're allowed and as a result delaying the flight.

When they arrived at BHX they discovered their bags were not on the plane. The guy at check in had switched the tags and sent their luggage to tripoli!

Also PIA, as with many airlines has a problem with rude F/A's. Maybe you should add that one to your list.

When my parents flew back to england they said the cabin crew on the ISB-CPH were awful. My mum couldn't even get a glass of water! But with a crew change at CPH the flight to BHX, the crew was excellent and friendly.

In summary I say PIA is not bad, definetly improving and I would fly them in the future. One of those airlines where your experience is a mix, depending on the day you decide to travel.

p.s cant help but notice how boring the shots of PIA aircraft are on this site, wat are the photographers capturing? it seems theyre more interested in getting the livery in full, compromising on the beauty of the planes, and there are no pictures of PKs workhorse the A300, except for one of the planes that crashed in Nepal.
.....up there with the best!

22,000 employees for PIA sounds excessive. Plus most of them got their jobs because they have some contact or friend at the govt. .The corruption thing , well that is normal for a govt. run airline , what they have to do with PIA is get it Private , reorganize the airline and try to make it more competitive .
