It seems strange for Hong Kong indeed. Besides, anyone knows what happens to the JAL flight departing on 13/4 at 03:50 - JL 2706 - to Fukuoka and the flight departing at 04:35 - JL 1704 -to Osaka/Kansai ? Is that some tours charter those flights, but JAL cannot provide?

Hey Everyone,

Im back from my 3 day trip with a lot of flying!  Big thumbs up Yesterday Denver was closed due to snow and a power outage. This caused massivie delays in the united system. Chicago was also affected, but mainly from severe thunder storms. While the aircraft may have been on a mechanical, I think that DEN and ORD were key players in the flights cancleations. Even though that aircraft may not have even passed through there.

Hkgspotter,

If I'm not mistaken, UA only have a couple of 744 flights out of JFK. So if one plane goes mechanical, they'll be hard-pressed to find a replacement in short order.

If it had been ORD or SFO, then it might be a different story.

I've just back from CLK. Will that be a possible reason for the UA821 cancelled due to strong headwind at the polar?
But the CO99 arrived on-time today

You dont cancel a flight because of a thunderstorm !!, this can not be the reason.

949,

That sounds a more possible reason.

Wanna bet? tons of flights are cancelled due to Thunderstorms. Try Camp O'Hare back in mid september. Hundreds were cancelled... the weather was aweful..... I remember driving into work that day from Lake Geneva WI... the tri state was moving at about 20 mph due to the hard rain.. you could barely see 100' in front of you... took me about 3 hours to drive 70 miles vs 90 minutes.

Also, try O'Hare yesterday. The T.V.s at IAD said that ORD was experencing severe thunderstomrs causing a lot of flight canclations and delays.

Of course you can cancel a flight because of a thunderstorm... planes fly around thunderstorms, so it doesn't make much sense to take off into one... taking from my knowledge of meteorology (which was recently expanded by leaps and bounds thanks to a class) the wind shear associated with thunderstorms makes it extremely dangerous to fly in one, do you remember the DL incident at DFW (they made that movie about it, Fire & Rain i think the title was).

It could have been a mechanical, or even a mixture of several factors, but flights can be cancelled in the event of a thunderstorm that causes conditions that are unsafe.
