1st USAirways Flight To AMS

Thu Apr 12, 2001 6:49 pm

Well not really the first but USAirways just re-started service from Philadelphia to Amsterdam today with a 767-200 I believe. It was met with a water cannon salute and is now sitting at the G pier with a Delta and Continental aircraft. The aircraft arrived on time and is set to depart in about an hour.

I wish I had brought my camera to work today...

Hello NUair,
that's a nice news, thanks for posting.
Do you think USAirways will upgrade the Amsterdam flight to an A330?
Let us know if and when they will do that.

I heared that USAirways was going to start service to Brussels as well. Can somebody confirm this ?
from what date will it start and will they also use the B767 ?
Besides Delta, United ,Continental and American ( coorp. with Sabena ) it would be the 5th American carrier selling flights US - Brussels.
Will NorthWest ever come to Brussels or will the agreement with KLM prevent that ?
American is flying to London and Delta to Paris as well and London/Paris are as easy to reach from Brussels as Amsterdam. This doesn't seem to keep them from serving Brussels !

There are very few intercontinental destinations from Brussels ( except from US and Africa ( Sabena ) if you compare it with some other airports. For example in Asia there is only a flight to Tokyo and Australia you can forget completely. The direct flights to South-Africa are stopped as well ( Sabena ) and South America is only possible to Brazil.

What would be the reason why so few intercontinental destinations are available from Brussels ?

They have commited to using the 767 until the end of the next scheduling period (October 1st) but they could always throw some other equipment onto this route (Egypt Air and Iran Air are notorious for doing this).

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened with all of USAirways European routes if the United merger had gone through (is it still a possibility?). They seem to have a lot of overlapping service. Anyone know what will happen with TWA's international routes, or what was left of them?

You answered by yourself: Bruxelles is too close to Paris, London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt!
And Sabena has having big troubles since a lot of times so that they cannot expand themselves.

Belugaboy, CDG is only about 1.5 hours away on the Thalys and has many more choices.

On the American Airlines website there's a link to a new joint TWA/AA site where you can find how TWA destinations are affected by the acquisition.

The Philadelphia-Amsterdam route shouldbe very succesfull so as someone mentioned they should switch to the A330-300 after Oct-1,2001 . For some reason I have a doubt on how succesfull the Philadelphia-Bruxelles route will be .
