Shuttle 727s To Stay?

Today I flew round trip from DCA to LGA. I flew up on the 9:00 US Airways Shuttle, B727-225 N923TS. The number on the nosewheel was 843, which is left over from when the aircraft was Eastern's N8843E. Why don't they change the nosewheel number to 923 to match its current registration?
Anyway, when we landed at LGA, we parked right beside a US Airways Shuttle 727 in new colors! It was beautiful! I didn't think they were going to paint the Shuttle aircraft in new colors because they were going to get rid of them. I guess if they are repainting them they are going to keep them for a while. The aircraft I saw in new colors was N918TS.
I returned on the 7:30 Delta Shuttle, B727-232 N525DA. Up until now, all the Delta Shuttle aircraft had four-hundred numbers in their registrations. Now they are adding those with five-hundred numbers in their registrations. These are the newest 727s from Delta's fleet. Does this mean they are going to keep 727s on the Shuttle since they are spending all that money to put in new interiors with leather seats? Sounds like it. I don't know if these 727s are being assigned to the Shuttle to replace older ones, or if they are just enlarging their Shuttle fleet.

Neat!!!! I bet the 727-200 in USAirways' new colors looks nice. Do they still have 727-100's?

No, they got rid of the 100s years ago. The last one I was on was on the USAir Shuttle from LGA to BOS on 8/8/93. It was N901TS, A B727-25.

That's right, the 727-100's are gone forever. No major airline has any left, I know American got rid of the last ones in 1993. United doesn't have any left, neither does Northwest, neither does Continental, neither does Fed Ex, I don't think Delta ever had any...
It seems to me that the Shuttle 727's will be here for a while, Bob you made a good point, if you saw a 727 in the new US Airways colors then you can be sure that they will be around a little longer. I don't know how much longer US Airways is going to keep them but I'm sure that Delta will keep them for at least four more years, do you remember we have been talking about the Delta Shuttle 727's a while ago? I said that the 727's in the Shuttle fleet would be the last ones to be phased out.
So what will be the replacement for the 727 in the middle of the 2000's? That's a good question. US Airways will probably replace them with MD-80's or 737-400's, Delta probably with MD-80's or 757's, I imagine. After 2005, you can be sure that you won't see 727's with the major airlines anymore.

Last Tuesday, I was on the 6:15am US Airways flight from PHL to TPA. It was a 757 and I was the only person in 1st class (24 seats, two flight attendants and me!). I had my breakfast served the same time the pilot announced 10,000 feet.

One of the attendants was talkative so I picked his brain about several topics, one of which was aircraft, including the shuttle. Following are the major points:

> US Airways eventually will replace the 727s on the Shuttle, but they had to complete further negotiations with the pilots' union to enable them to fly DCA - BOS, IAD - BOS and PHL - BOS as shuttle flights. He said that the rumor mill had it that either A319s or 737-400s would be used. Management won't play its cards until all agreements are in hand. His guess was that the 727s would begin to be phased out for whatever replacement towards the end of this year or first of next year.

> He said that US Airways was repainting two 727s to the new livery and had decided to paint the MD-80s to the new livery. They were stepping up route expansion and now needed to keep the MD-80s. They were getting rid of the old DC-9s as fast as possible and transferring 737-200s to MetroJet faster than originally expected (another reason to keep the MD-80s).

> He said that the A319/320 delivery schedule was for 2 to 3 aircraft a month all summer and, beginning in the fall, 1 aircraft a week. The first A330-300 was scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 2000.

> US Airways had tried hard to acquire some additional 767s, but that the ones they looked at were in such bad condition, they decided to forgo several international routes until the A330s arrive. He specifically stated that they had looked at two 767s in Singapore, but that they were beaten up and barely airworthy.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that FedEx still flies 727-100's. We have two (actually 3 if you count the Feeder F-27) based at GSP and one is a 727-100. It's obvious just by looking at the number 2 engine air intake and the length of the plane next to the -200 beside it.

How Was The Service?

I read in Usairways Attache Magizine that the service would be improved on the Shuttle. It says that they would start serving light meals on flights that are during meal times, And for snack flights they would start serving cheeze, raisins, crackers and more. How was the service on your shuttle flight?

Service was excellent on both flights. The US Airways light meal service is only offered on weekdays. All I got was a bag of pretzels and a cup of coffee. On Delta I got a snack basket containing carrot sticks with ranch dressing dip, crackers and cheese, a small Snickers bar, and some strong Certs mints, along with two cups of coffee. When I deplaned, at the end of the jetway I saw a cart which contained Delta Shuttle Bistro Bags, which must be used for weekday flights. Remember, on weekdays the fare is much higher than the sixty dollars you pay on Saturdays. On both flights, deplaning was through both the forward and rear exits, even though there were only 27 passengers on the Delta flight.
Shuttle flights, even on weekends, are about the best you can find anywhere on short sectors in the US. I wish this kind of service and comfort could be extended to mainline flights.

Rear Exits

When you deplane through the rear exit is there a jetway, or stairs?

There is a stairway that opens under the tail on 727s. You get to walk outside, which gives you a great opportunity to take pictures of the aircraft from up close. Then you walk into the terminal at ground level.

Technically, the 727-100 is still used by an American "major airline". Several dozen still fly for UPS, and occasionally they are converted to passenger layouts to do charter operations. In terms of aircraft owned, UPS is one of the ten largest U.S. airlines.
