Should I Fly AA Or UA?

Sat Apr 14, 2001 4:56 am

Hey everyone! I'll be going from LAX or SNA to GRB (Green Bay, WI, USA) in early November. I was wondering if I should fly UA and take my first ride on a 744 (from LAX-ORD) and connect on Air Wisconsin, or fly AA and fly on a 757, 737-800, or 767 but fly First Class and connect on American Eagle. However, if I fly UA, it will be in coach. Thanks in advance!

RWally

BTW, in case your wondering, I'm going to Green Bay to go watch the Packers beat Tampa Bay on 11/4.

Even if we were talking coach, I might lean toward AA because of their more room throughout coach (unless you were lucky enough to end up in Economy Plus).

Since we're talking first in AA vs. coach on UA, there's no contest. Go AA and enjoy the game (make sure to get one of those Cheese Head things).

Go with UA. I hate to say it, but the last few times I've flown AA, they've sucked. So, go with UAL.

Go Green Bay!

Go UA, especially since you get to experience the 747-400 on a "cheaper" domestic flight vs an expensive Int'l flight. If you are going on space/comfort choose AA I must say.

I'm sorry, but anyone who tells you to take UA Coach over AA First Class has to be smoking crack.  Smokin cool

Besides, UA changes equipment all the time, so even if they say the flight is going to be a 744, chances are by the time your flight comes around, it will be different equipment...

UA's 744s have PTVs in coach...well most of them do. By August, all of them will.

By the way, where do you see UA offering a 744 between LAX and ORD in November? My electronic timetable lists no such flight (the largest plane is a 763 between those two cities)...

Mr. 717 -- Sorry you had a bad experience on AA last time you flew them. I've had bad experiences (and good) on both airlines.

All things being equal, first class beats the hell out of coach any day on either airline.

A couple weeks back, UA's website said there was a 744 from LAX-ORD. I have a friend who works for UA, and he said it is the continuing part of the SYD-LAX-ORD run. I guess this just proves that UA does change the equipment a lot. I think I'll go with AA (probably because they're my fav. and I can fly First Class)...but who knows. Thanks again.

...I don't know. I'm like 99.9999% leaning toward AA, but if for some great reason I should fly UA, then I'd maybe reconsider.

I would say UAL cause of better service personalities on board & airline staffs are very nice. American... hmmm

I have not made any flights with any carriers within the USA but to Chicago OHare(08-09-93) to connect to Terminal 5 International with Royal Jordanian to Middle East, same with NY JFK Terminal 5 TWA with Royal Jordanian Airlines (03-31-98).

I think you should click here http://www.oag.com, and Departure is : LAX // Dest: GRB

Connections:

Flight UA 842 - United Airlines
Aircraft 777

Depart Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Apt
Dep. Time 08:30am Nov 03

Arrive Chicago, Chicago O'Hare International Apt
Arr. Time 02:26pm Nov 03

Change at Chicago O'Hare International Apt

Flight UA 5806 - United Airlines *
Aircraft CRJ

Depart Chicago, Chicago O'Hare International Apt
Dep. Time 03:45pm Nov 03

Arrive Green Bay, Green Bay
Arr. Time 04:35pm Nov 03

Travel Time 6 hours 5 mins Total Stops None

Flight was not available nonstop.
If the game begins earlier than your arrival time on November 4, 2001; I have a flight date a day earlier than the Game Day !! Your convience is always there !!

If you are flying coach and leg room is important to you (like it is to me), then go with AA. UA's leg room is typical coach. AA is not.

I always tell people ot fly UA because I try to stay loyal to them and they have been good to my family over the years. BUT, if you can fly first class over coach in any airline situation, I say go for first.

If you can, try to take a 767 because you might get one configured for Int'l and get a PTV. Also for the Green Bay flight you're better with American Eagle because you're assured an ERJ vs a possiblity of being on a Dornier turboprop and the possibility of being on a CRJ/ARJ.

Enjoy wisconsin.

You should rephrase your question. FIRST OR COACH? Well lets see.... sounds like a Celebrity jeopardy question to me... Anyway, since you get First class I'd say AA. But for the same price you should be able to go Midwest Express, which I've heard is good.

I personally I'm not a big fan of both in terms of service or anything else. So I fly SWA, CO, NWA, Midwest, Midway and Jetblue for US domestic travel. For international it's Kuwait, Air India, Virgin, KLM, SAS, Emerates, Gulf or SIA.

if you like cramped spaces and the feeling of being surrounded fly UA.
AA is by far the superior airline, the more room in coach makes all the difference in the world and to fly 1st class is a no brainer. That is to long of a flight to be cramped up in UA's coach seats.

Have all you AA fans forgotten that UA offers an Economy Plus section with typically more than 2" of room than AA's MRTC product?!

Econ+ offers 35"/36" (more are 36") whereas AA MRTC offers 33"-35" (more are 33", 34").

There are pros and cons to both carriers.

For UAL, even if you don't get the 744, you will get some nice plane from LAX to ORD. Compare this with the fact that w/ AA you could get stuck w/ a MD-80 to Chicago. UAL by far serves higher quality food than AA does.

The benefits of AA is you say you would get first class over coach. That would be cool. AA has more room in coach, and IMO only has nicer interiors and ambience for a long flight to Chicago.

Have you forgotten that unless RWally is a silver or better card holder on UA or is travelling on a full fare he can't sit in EconPlus?

TAKE AA FIRST CLASS....FIRST CLASS ON ANYONE IS BETTER THAN COACH!!!!!

Take AA, of course! FC beats Economy and Economy Plus any day!

Economy Plus. Offering more legroom than American.

Well, Im from Milwaukee. If you can you should take Midwest Express, connecting in Milwaukee and going on with Midwest Express Connection, Skyway. They have really the best service and they fly from LAX and American Eagle connects YX passengers in CA into LAX. You'll love the experience on Midwest Express much better than any other airline. Its rated the #1 airline in the world at epinions.com.

UA or AA???

THEY'RE BOTH IDENTICAL!!!!!

AA: Has prettier interiors
UA: Has prettier FAs
AA: Has MRTC
UA: Has better food
AA: Has a new uncrowded STL hub
UA: Has more widebody domestic routes

so...........

I fail to understand why many who responded to this post is suggesting to go w/ UA in CRAMPED coach rather than AA in FIRST CLASS. Why are you recommending a less comfortable way to travel??

Another thought for comparison:

Since you mentioned you would be changing planes in Chicago, UAL has a far superior hub operation in Chicago than AA does. It is easier to navigate, much bigger, more exciting than AA's.
