How Much Does A Space Shuttle Cost?

Sun Apr 15, 2001 5:54 am

The question is quite explicit! I mean the type of shuttle in the Columbia, Discovery... class.

They've been out of production for some time now. You would probably have to buy a second-hand model. You should consider the Russian "Buran" as it is nearly a carbon copy and perhaps cheaper, as you could pay in rubles.

This reminds me of a joke:

Lets assume Mrjworth is correct and the price is $1.7 billion.

After years of scrimping and saving this geezer has saved $1,699,999,998 dollars. His only two dollars of buying the shuttle.

He goes up to his friend:

Shuttle buyer: "Can I borrow 2 dollars."
Friend: "What for?"
Shuttle buyer: "I want to buy a space shuttle."
Friend: "Here have 4 dollars and get me one as well!"

 Big thumbs up

It's very difficult to put a price on each of the individual machines as these projects are funded on a programme basis rather than a unit basis. The shuttle programme was oficially launched in 1972. The first machine (Enterprise)was completed in 1976 amd made glide tests (from the back of an ex AA 747) in 1977. The first space flight-worthy shuttle was Clumbia making its first space flight just over 20 years ago on 12 April 1981. The Static Test Article (STA), a full size shuttle built for vibration and pad tests was brought up to full flight status and christened Challenger. It was unfortunately lost in the accident of January 1986. The remaining shuttles built were Endeavour, Atlanta and Discovery. At the moment there are variouis design studies for a replacement vehicle but it looks like the oresent fleet will have to soldier on for at least another ten years.

What would you be giving in trade? Are you interested in leasing or buying the Shuttle? With a little more information I'm sure we can find a Space Shuttle to meet your space transportation needs at a monthly payment you can afford.
