SFO To Mexico Underserved?

Mon Apr 16, 2001 1:13 pm

I know that LAX is a major gateway for traffic into Mexico on the US West Coast.

However, I think SFO deserves much more flights to Mexico. The reason is simple: the San Francisco Bay Area has a very large and vibrant Mexican-American community that would love to visit Mexico without having to transit through LAX.

The problem is that I don't think there's enough flights to Mexico--the flights use relatively small planes (Allegro uses the 727-200 and Mexicana uses the A320). Both Mexican and US-based airlines should be flying at least 2-3 times a day at least to Mexico City and probably once a day to Guadalajara.

E-mail the airport or something, and give them your suggestions about flights to Mexico City and Guadalajara from San Francisco.

San Francisco is served by Mexicana from both Mexico City and Guadalajara, plus other cities in the Mexican riviera if I'm not mistaken.

You got to remember that Mexicana already flies extensively to the bay area. Not only is SFO served but Mexicana also serves OAK and SJO. 3 airports in one area is quite a lot for an international airline.

Nevertheless, I believe that AeroMexico should start their own bay area market once the airlines are sold.

I think you meant to say SJC and not SJO.
SJC- San Jose, Cali.
SJO- San Jose, Costa Rica.

United Airlines operates some flights to Mexico from SFO. But Ray, you are correct. We do need more flights, or use larger equipment on the routes. I'm hoping that United reverts to the 757 over the A320 on the MEX routes. Possibly even a 763D if capacity demands it.

Hopefully, now that both Mexicana and AeroMexico are being privatized, both airlines will seriously consider large-scale wide-body airplane purchases.

I think Mexicana could easily fill a 767-300 on their SFO-MEX flights.

Mexicana serves MEX, GDL, MLM, and MTY nonstop from SFO. I believe MEX gets 4 daily flights, GDL gets 5, MLM and MTY get one each. All A320s with the occasional 757 sprinkled in on MEX and GDL flights. Both very handsome in the MX colorscheme.

United Airlines serves MEX with one daily nonstop to MEX and several one-stoppers through LAX. The nonstop is an A320 and the one-stoppers originate as Shuttle 737s changing to A320s and A319s out of LAX.

Delta Air Lines once served MEX from SFO, a route inherited from Western. The market was quite lucrative, however DL pulled out of it because it was not in line with the corporate emphasis on East Coast operations. All that now remains of WAL's once-mighty operations to Mexico from SFO and LAX are two flights: DL726, a redeye from LAX to MEX on the 757, and DL427, an afternoon departure to GDL utilizing a 727.

Boy, leave it to me to bring Delta into any topic!

I definitely expect to see AM jump into the SFO market once we see the demise of Cintra. The market is just too big and too profitable not to. I also think we'll see MX get into such profitable markets as DFW and IAH.

It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

Alaska used to have daily one-stop service to Guadalajara and Mexico City from the Bay Area (and I think a non-stop SFO-GDL flight existed at one point). However, they pulled out of that market about six years ago in order to focus "sol"ely on the resort markets.

Presently, they fly from SFO to Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Mazatlan on 737-400s and MD-80s. On June 16, they will start SFO-Ixtapa service, although it will only be on Saturdays.

Sound like more than ample service to me.
